I have to say it the responses Iāve seen about Ariana Grandeās body are getting to me. Why is it the narrative is āoh, no one needs to be commenting on her body.ā āYou donāt know whatās going on with her.ā āShe says sheās healthy so leave it.ā Or worse, āsheās asked politely for people to stop commenting on her body.ā
And thatās all fine BUT I specifically remember when people came for Lizzo ALL THE TIME about her body and she never got that kind of grace. She asked people to stop talking about her weight and appearance and people never did. South Park had a whole joke about her weight. Lizzo said she was vegan and worked out and was getting healthy but none of that was given understanding or grace.
It feels very ick that Ariana is getting all this sympathy and support about her body but Lizzo was made into a joke. Is it because ari is white and thin and Lizzo is black and had a bigger body? It speaks for itself loud and clear
Oh for sure! It's for sure the deadly combo of misogynoir and fatphobia when it comes to the comments Lizzo receives over her body.
Ariana Grande looks like a frail tiny white woman which will invoke a lot of feelings of protection since white women, esp skinny white women, are associated with innocence and fragility. And that's why people are quick to defend Ariana. Then, there's also the fact that we live in a fatphobia society where thinness is glorified and an indicator of health, while fatness is seen as a moral failing and something that needs to be eradicated.
