Like most Hawkes, Ilora (who dislikes her given name and does typically prefer just "Hawke") has a rough time of it. She's highly responsible and diplomatic to a fault. From a young age, she felt pressure to support her family and protect her younger siblings, which meant she felt the loss of Carver, and later Bethany to the Grey Wardens, very keenly.
In Kirkwall, Hawke struggles to be understanding and keep the disparate members of her friend group together, but isn't wholly successful. Isabela departs Kirkwall with the Tome of Koslun when the Qunari invade. Hawke enters into an intense romance with Anders, but due to her own belief in diplomacy she can't get past the betrayal of him blowing up the chantry and ends their relationship. Though they're no longer together, Hawke still cares about Anders and protects him in the years after they leave Kirkwall. In particular, she makes sure he's safely out of Southern Thedas when Corypheus becomes a concern.
During the same time period, Varric continues to be Hawke's biggest supporter, even as her mental health suffers and she blames herself for everything that went wrong in Kirkwall and with her family. The two of them start to develop romantic feelings for each other. Unfortunately, before either of them are ready to admit it Hawke is left in the Fade. Varric mourns his friend and what could have been for the rest of his life. I like to think they find each other again in the Fade 🥲
