Reggie spotted familiar blond hair on the man who stood upon the mountain beside Corypheus and the feeling of dread spread through his entire being. He knew this battle would have a slim chance of being won, but so many people were depending on him to be their saviour, including Valeriana. And so he chose to rally the mages of Redcliffe and fight.

“Val’s not going to raise it alone.” Garrett finally said. The warrior worried his thumb between his teeth, expression unreadable, and Valeriana tilted her head as he continued. “She has us.”
Leave her. Meredith’s words echoed in his mind as the Gallows courtyard was left vacant by the Templars. He hauled Valeriana’s lifeless body into his arms, and the stench of burning flesh and fresh blood permeated. He knew he had no choice but to bring her to Anders or else she would not survive the night with her wounds. He only wondered what consequence this would bring to the Templar Order as it became clear to him at this very moment that THIS MEANS WAR.
“Every recruit must go through a secret ritual we call the Joining in order to become a Grey Warden,” Duncan explained, “The ritual is brief, but some preparation is required. We must begin soon.”
“Why is this ritual a secret?” He hoped it was nothing like the Harrowing. He couldn’t stand to be nauseous for hours on end again from the concentrated lyrium he’d been forced to consume.
*pats arthur’s shoulder* my sweet summer child. :/
Dude how would Fenris react to Val being made tranquil? 👀
Sonny I know you’re just trying to get me to post a snippet, so take it you vulture (affectionate)
“We have to get her to Anders!” Merrill sobbed, cradling Valeriana’s body close to her frame.
“Why? So that abomination can come out of the sewers and endanger everyone in the city with his unchecked temper? Have you forgotten what he did to the mage he swore to protect?” Fenris scoffed in annoyance, despite feeling the unfamiliar sense of pity. Compassion.
It disgusted him. The resentment that he had for Valeriana had dissipated as he bore witness to the barbarism that mages had once inflicted upon him. But she was a mage, and Tevinter, at that. No matter how benevolent they seemed, they’d always abuse their power. She deserved no pity.
“But they—“
“They did what was necessary.” Fenris’ tone was cold as ice, his expression hard as stone. “Valeriana was as dangerous as they come. She is Tevinter by blood. That same evil flows through her veins. It’s only a matter of time before she would harm an innocent.”
“How could you say something so…so cruel?” Merrill held Valeriana’s body tighter in her arms, “She was good to you Fenris, no matter how much you pushed her away… She was kind!” Fenris’ tense posture relaxed as he digested Merrill’s words. It is true, she was good to him. Far better than he would have expected for seven long years. And then, he felt shame.
He sighed heavily, slipping a hand into his pack, before he wrapped nimble fingers around a healing potion encased in a stained glass bottle.
“Give this to her.” His voice was an octave lower, softer as he handed Merrill the elixir.

would it be possible to post a snippet of your reign of fire fic? I am very intrigued!
Sure! I don't want to spoil too much since I plan on releasing the first three chapters at the end of the month, but here you go :)
Elaena’s steel clashed against her father’s sword as she blocked his strike. Sweat slipped against her forehead as she huffed, and she shrugged her braid from her shoulder.
“Good,” Laenor praised. “Again!”
She lowered her blades, and flourished her shortswords in both of her hands as she took an offensive position. With calculated steps she eyed Laenor to anticipate his next move while her bastard brother crossed his arms over his chest and gave Loreon Lannister an impressed look.
“Two gold dragons say my father slices her leg,” Jace joked.
“I dunno, Jace. She’s been training night and day this past fortnight for this,” Loreon said as Laenor rushed left.
But she saw his eyes move right, and the clash of steel rang once more as she parried the blow by holding her blades vertically. She swiftly evaded his counter attack as she spun before she held a sword level with his throat.
Her father’s eyes widened with surprise, and Elaena grinned.
“Dead,” she said breathlessly, and Laenor chuckled as she lowered her weapon.
“You owe me,” Loreon snorted as scattered applause resonated in the courtyard.
“I believe that’s enough for today,” Laenor gave her an approving smile. “Well done, Elaena.”
She drew in an exhausted breath, and Laenor clapped his hand on her shoulder.
“You’ve improved considerably.”
“It’s not good enough to fight in a real battle should the time call for it,” she muttered as she began to walk towards the weapons table.
“Don't talk down on yourself, love. You’ve the skill to defend yourself,” he countered gently, walking beside her. “And that is most important.”
“I still don’t have a dragon,” Elaena sighed as she placed the swords back on the display, and Laenor frowned.
“Elaena... There’s more than one way to bind yourself to a dragon. Daemon didn’t claim Caraxes until he was nineteen,” her father chuckled. “The same with my sister. And look at her now - bonded with Vhagar. The time will come, darling. But when opportunity strikes,” he held up his index finger, and gently poked her nose. “Do not hesitate to seize it. Now go. I’m sure His Grace is eagerly awaiting your arrival.”
She gave him a half smile before turning to leave while he spoke to the quartermaster.
“Are you going to come to the Dragonpit today, Sister?” her younger brother asked as he moved to walk beside her, ascending the steps. “I’m going to feed Vermax.”
“What use would that serve me?” She asked pointedly while the guards opened the doors for them.
“Well, I-I thought you might’ve wanted to take a ride with me,” Jace chuckled softly as their voices carried within the corridors.
A current of deception laced his words, and she gave him a sidelong glance.
“Vermax isn’t large enough for two grown riders yet, Jace,” she shrugged. “And I already promised Grandfather a visit today. Look, just… take Luke. I’m sure he’ll want to go with you.”
He seemed disappointed by her dismissal, and he pressed his lips together. “All right, if you say so.”
For six years, she suffered the abuses at the hands of her Templar bodyguards, and in the four years following her Harrowing, it was no better. In spite of her freedom to socialise without a knight intervening, she was still isolated, save for Anders and Amell. They were her only allies in this gilded cage. They were the only two that didn’t see her as a monster.
“I take it you’ve been adjusting well with assisting the new Senior Enchanter,” Irving said, pulling her out of her thoughts.
She blinked slowly, shifting her jaded eyes to the Knight-Commander who stood to her right. She stopped listening to what Irving was saying halfway through his pointless speech. It was hardly ever important. She knew there was a trivial request coming, possibly something about asking the apprentices to assist with cataloguing the new books that had arrived.
“But that is not why I’ve summoned you, child,” he continued, and she inhaled slowly.
“What would you have of me, First Enchanter?” She did her best not to show her vexation, willing herself to give him a practised smile.
“King Cailan requires talented mages to leave for Ostagar to assist him with combat,” He clasped his frail hands together, and gave a soft smile in return, “and I believe you would be a fine addition to his army, Valeriana.”
rofl so right off the bat, Val hates being a circle mage, and she finds Irving annoying.
