Releasing their underwhelming debut Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman in 1981, it wasn’t until Klymaxx’s new wave electro third album Meeting in the Ladies Room (1984) that they became a femme force in the industry. With the catchy “The Men All Pause,” “Meeting in the Ladies Room” and the mushy ballad “I Miss You,” their most successful single, Klymaxx had become more self-contained, writing tracks and directing the sessions (“The Men All Pause” was co-produced by Joyce “Fenderella” Irby and Cooper). “We started writing for ourselves, because we were tired of men writing us lines like, ‘When you get home baby, I’m going to rub your feet,” Cooper. “We complained to Dick and he said, ‘Fine, do your own album.’ With that, Klymaxx became real. We had freedom, and that’s a beautiful thing.” As seen in “The Men All Pause” video, with Cooper clad in fuzzy leopard-skinned top, it wasn’t uncommon for her to step from behind her drums to sing and talk smack on the mic. At the same time, she was also making creative strides with her music. Griffey, a former drummer himself, had a knack for grooming producers including Leon Sylvers III, Reggie and Vincent Calloway, LA and Babyface and Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. Klymaxx was the first band Jam and Lewis recorded back in 1982 when the emerging duo produced the group’s second album Girls Will Be Girls. In the studio, Cooper closely observed the duo at work. “I was completely inspired by them and their methods and approach to music,” she says. “I watched, listened and I learned.” While women are often excluded from the production process, Griffey took a chance. “He just purely saw my talent,” Cooper says. “There aren’t many men in this industry who respect the vision of woman, but Dick wasn’t afraid.” Cooper’s sound became a mixture of Minneapolis styled synthesizers, George Clinton’s cosmic slop, James Brown eternal funk and the majestic pop of Quincy Jones, that was distinctively her own. “The producer is more than someone who just plays keyboards and says, ‘I produced this.’ The producer is the overseer, the person who brings in the right elements while making sure the music and vocals are correct. Sometimes I play all the instruments, sometimes I just bring in the right people and sit back.” [Read More]

Klymaxx
“You should try putting on makeup while riding in a bus!"
"Each of us is a very serious-minded business woman; we do know what we're doing." Kiymaxx band members include: (back row) Lynn Maisby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, (front row) joyce 'FendereHa' Irby, Lorena Hardimon, and Bernadette Cooper.
"Hello, Fenderella," said a voice on the telephone. "I just wanted you to know that I love your voice, especially on I Miss You. This is Patti LaBel1e. Goodbye!" Fenderella, bass player and singer with the group Klymaxx, was amazed! "Can you imagine Patti LaBel1e calling to say that she loves my voice?" she asks. The answer is yes . . . a lot of people love Fenderella's voice, and that's one reason why Klymaxx has become so popular. In fact, Klymaxx is one of the most popular groups in the world.
Besides Fenderella, Klymaxx includes founder and drummer Bernadette Cooper, guitarist Cheryl Cooley, keyboardist Lynn Malsby, synthesizer whiz Robbin Grider, and guitaristvocalist Lorena Hardimon. The band members have been together for years, working hard to perfect their sound. "By 1980, we were all here," Fenderella says. "We had to drop two people because of conflicts, but we're all dedicated to trying to reach our goals. Now we're on our way." Klymaxx made two albums that didn't sell very well, Never Underestimate The Power Of A Woman and Girls Will Be Girls. But the band's third album, Meeting In The Ladies Room, was a smash hit. Four hit songs have come from the album: Meeting In The Ladies Room, The Men All Pause, I Miss You, and Lock And Key. Klymaxx is hot and getting hotter.
"What surprises a lot of people," says Bernadette, "is that we do know what we're doing. Each of us is a very serious-minded business woman. A lot of groups, especially female groups, are told what to do and say by people who control them and get most of the money. But we are in charge of everything. The six of us control every aspect of Klymaxx.
"On our first tour, due to our small budget, we had to decide whether to hire a person to do our sound or someone to act as a personal valet handling our makeup and hair. We decided the sound was more important than the makeup and hair."
"Life on the road is hectic but fun," says Fenderella. "It's slightly different for us because we're women. Since none of us has any children, it's a little easier. The one thing that we really hate is carrying luggage. A lot of times we have to handle our own personal gear, and none of us likes that. You should try putting on makeup while riding in a bus! At least one of us always sticks herself in the eye with the eyeliner pencil." Still, everyone in the band knows that getting to the top wouldn't be any fun if it weren't hard work. "We're on our way," repeats Fenderella. "And somehow, none of us has ever doubted it." No one else doubts it either.
