Everyone evacuating the Castleship really got me good, but Coran’s scenes hit me the hardest. Coran has been near single-handedly maintaining this entire ship by himself since season 1.

He’s not a paladin, he can’t create wormholes, but he gets the ship up and running whenever it fails, he works his ass off. He keeps it clean, he makes repairs. He does his best to keep things in order so the others can focus on the fight, and he joins it when he needs to.

For one, Keith doesn't seem the type to react well when he's forced to do anything by someone else. And you can't force the kind of respect and trust he's shown to have for Shiro anyway.

And Shiro's never really forced anyone to do anything unless it puts them or the team directly in danger, or when making final calls as a leader. Look at when Pidge tried to leave Voltron in S1. Shiro told her how he felt and waited for her to make her own decisions.

He's patient. He'd put in the effort to be friendly and make Keith aware that he's there, but ultimately let Keith make the decision for himself. And I think Keith would appreciate that kind of respect.

Also, Keith isn't completely open even to Shiro, despite him being canonically shown to be closer to him than the others. Every time Shiro asks if he wants to talk, Keith refuses. Shiro's guilty of this himself, actually. But Shiro makes it known that he cares and is willing to listen, if that's what Keith wants. He respects Keith's boundaries, he's patient, and that's where the respect and trust stems from.
