Runic magic is rooted in ancient Norse belief that runes were active forces capable of influencing fate rather than merely representing language or ideas. The runes of the Elder Futhark were each associated with specific concepts and powers, such as Fehu for wealth and energy, Raidho for journeys and destiny, Hagalaz for chaos and destruction, and Algiz for protection. In this tradition, runes were understood as tools that could shape outcomes when properly used, reflecting a worldview in which symbols carried inherent power tied to the structure of reality.

Historically, runes were carved, painted, spoken aloud, or concealed as part of magical and ritual practices. They were used for purposes such as protection, battle magic, divination, healing, and curses, often combined with chanting known as galdr or trance‑based practices called seiðr. Norse sagas caution that working with runes required skill and restraint, as misuse could lead to harmful consequences. Rather than passive markings, runes were believed to act upon the world through intention, ritual action, and spoken word.
