Exactly 8 years ago, he had been defeated three times in a row on three different surfaces by greatest competitor the game has ever seen also his biggest nemesis on the court. At the conclusion of Aus Open he did his best to conduct the loserās formalities with his customary charming graciousness. Instead he crumbled, he burst into tears. This, it appeared, was his āBjorn Borg momentā.
Whatever he might have said ( āOh god, itās killing meā), for him that moment wasnāt just about defeat, it wasnāt just about the spirit-sapping closeness of the competition,it wasnāt just about top spin relentlessly exploiting his backhand, but it was Nadal who had managed to get well and truly inside his head. The most sublime talent the game had seen appeared exhausted. If you have reached the heights he has reached, you donāt come back.
Among all of these outstanding figures in his exclusive record book, this Aus Open title is the most astounding. This is because there was a moment when it seemed he was finished. There was the upsetting loss to Raonic in the semi-final on his beloved Wimbledon turf, perhaps down to him suffering fromĀ knee injury which ensued uncharacteristic retirement from the season. There is greater strength in depth than ever before on the menās tour with āBig 4ā peak of their career and The Spaniard showing glimpse of vintage best and, yet, he continues to make history.
The tears that doused the Rod Laver Arena on that Sunday 8 years ago which marked end of an era also were symptomatic of one of the most poignant rituals in sport: the rare moment of a hand over of ascendancy coming Full circle tonight with āRoger Federerā re-instilling his supremacy and resuming the normal order at 35 years of age yet refusing to put his foot down.
I loved you then, I love you still, I always have.
