"Was waiting tables. I was terrible. Instead of getting everyone's food quickly and getting out of the way, I tried to be people's friend. Let me tell you, people on family vacation from Pittsburgh who just paid $8 an orange juice for their 3 screaming kids at an all pink diner have no interest in friendship. They want blood.
After demoting myself to host, I went to work at a surf shop. The next five summers, I taught people how to surf, and every one of my pupils caught a wave by the end of their first lesson. Much better fit."

We thought that Gary, as a pioneering electronic matchmaker, would have an interesting story on "Why I Tried Online Dating..."
"My name is Gary Kremen and I invented online dating to find the woman of my dreams. I started the world's first open source software company called Full Source Software in 1991. Having been on the Internet since 1985, I never noticed more than a couple of women with Internet access. However around 1992, Full Source Software (and its successor company, Los Altos Technologies) started getting email orders from purchasing departments. Purchasing departments traditionally had a high percentage of women employees. As internal computer systems, such as Lotus Notes, got hooked up to the outside world, they got access.
When I noticed the third or so email message from women, I got to thinking maybe each one could be the woman of my dreams. I started thinking that maybe I could convince them to go to Kinko's and scan in their pictures and email them to me as attachments (the web was experimental and not in broad use at the time). Combining that with the idea of selling access to these email addresses (think 900 numbers) is how I invented online dating.
That is how I came up with the idea for Match.com.
