I think the reason having a comfort character automatically translates into having a character you can imagine being physically in the room and comforting you while you’re upset in my head is mostly because of warrior cats!
Warriors cats became my main interest somewhere in middle school and has not stopped being my overarching interest. So over the past decade and a bit I’ve consistently had comfort characters like Leafpool the warriors cat, and Brambleberry the warrior cat. And when I’m upset it’s such a cute and comforting mental exercise to imagine cuddling a sweet little kitty cat!
But, well, ya’ see, now all my comfort characters are stand-offish middle aged men. So, suffice to say that mental exercise has gotten a bit more awkward.
. . . It still works though!
It's always "Dr Ripley is evil" and never "Dr Ripley is a successful woman in STEM." "But she tortured Percy and Cass" y'all just hate to see women in male-dominated fields
