Happy fat bird Friday! Our overwintering Yellow-billed Cuckoo looks positively cute from this angle, showing off his beautiful curves. We have to carefully watch the weight of our overwintering birds because despite giving them plenty of room to exercise sometimes they are lazy! Yellow-billed Cuckoos are a neotropical bird, meaning they come to the United States or Canada to breed but migrate south of the border to enjoy balmy weather during the winter. Many neotropical migrants are insect specialists that wouldn’t survive if they were forced to deal with the conditions we see, even with our relatively mild winters! If you’re feeling the itch to soak of the sun right now, maybe you’re a neotropical migrant too! swvawildlifecenter.org #fatbird #bird #cuckoo #yellowbilledcuckoo #birb https://www.instagram.com/p/CYc1SS_sczB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Here’s some very early baby pix of Marble when I first saw him at the birb store. They’re kind of crummy quality because they were taken through scuffed plexiglass (if i opened the plexi, the babies would come running and screaming for food).
His grays were very dark almost black. They put him in a bowl so I could see him up close because he couldn’t perch yet. He was too small to be bratty just yet, but soon he would tug on his siblings’s tails, and their wing feathers to the point where he’d be pulling their wings out from their bodies. You can see even in these early pics he is massive compared to the others. They’d try to run but Marble discovered he could step on their tails to stop them from leaving! I’d see him raise his foot in slo mo and i’d be like O No. He was always stepping on them when he needed to reach stuff too. One time I saw him and that whiteface pearl perching next to each other on the pvc pipe playstand, i turned around a sec and then he was standing on top of the pearl using it as a platform. Not like mating or anything. He was sideways standing up straight on that baby and trying to reach a toy. The pearl baby didn’t even move and they stayed like that for a really long time until Marble fell off. What a bully! I still see remnants of that behavior even in the short time he’s been at home. He always puts his foot on things. I see him raise his foot just like he’d do with his siblings then *stomp*.
