Some of you may have seen my post on Tuesday about reaching a new milestone of 1120BPM in my quest to break the world record for fast single strokes! (The record currently stands at 1208BPM) As you can see, 1120 is at the very limit of my technique at the moment and I wouldn't exactly call it comfortable haha! However, reaching this new milestone has certainly made playing at 1000 much more comfortable. Just need to get comfortable with 1120 and I'll hopefully reach my next target of 1160. I'm counting it by playing 16th notes with the metronome and multiplying the metronome speed by 4 to get the total BPM. eg. 280×4=1120. Chops were a little rusty after Christmas last week! It's the only break I allow myself all year as my job prevents me from spending a lot of quality time with my family, it's also my birthday over the Christmas break and so I don't normally accept any gigs, unless it's really good money. Other than that, I play everyday for at least an hour, sometimes many more, whether I'm gigging or practising. I figure I need at least one annual break from it all but it does answer an interesting, hypothetical question in January: What would happen if I stopped working as hard as I do? Answer: That REALLY wouldn't be a good idea! After two weeks off, my technique is all stiff, my speed has lost a little control and everything I play generally feels like harder work than it should. However, on the plus side, I'm coming up with loads of new ideas!
