the exploitation of our emotional labor takes a toll on us. we come home with long faces, silent, wondering why we feel sick, upset, achey, cold. and in that exploitation of our emotional labor men so old they could be my fucking father use these narrow windows of robotic, transaction-like communication as opportunities to assert their masculinity (as if we needed a reminder). strategic and masturbatory in the magnification of their purported stamina, these men sport a mercilessly playful unwillingness to surrender to human dignity and deaden us in the process. we are not your honeys, sweeties, or baby-dolls. we are not your destiny. when we laugh or feign agreement or drown you in pleasantries, itâs because weâre being watched, recorded, monitored, graded. itâs because our livelihoods depend upon being other peopleâs doormats. we wish we werenât censored. we wish we could embarrass you to the point of you actually beginning the process of respecting us. we wish we could ask you to repeat what you said, but now imagine us as your daughters.Â
Me, at the end of college: the hegemony of the dichotomy of the reification of the dialectic of the jingoistic supremacy of the phallic fascism of the kyriarchy
Me, rn: what is a microwave how does it work
As women weâre always told to be The Better Person â to put everyone elseâs needs before our own, to say sorry when weâre not even fully at fault, to continue meaningless relationships with people who have mistreated/exploited/abused us and inculcated us with fear, and itâs a deadening, disorienting process that seems to have neither an end nor a reprieve
Most days I wander,
heavy-hearted and waiting
for you like a ghost.

who were your predators growing up? did you know them personally? a pastor, a soccer coach, a teacher, another personâs friend, father, brother? a laundry list of male extended relatives? who are your predators as you grow up? the young man that watches and follows you after class, only to ask you where youâre running off to like you fucking owe him an apology? strangers on street corners, in bars and restaurants, staring at your body as it moves in its natural way, projecting their own obscenities onto you, making jokes about your name, how you remind them of all the women theyâve consumed as they, too, âgrew upâ? who are your predators now that youâre grown up? the older male coworker who has too much to say about the female anatomy, who really shouldnât have anything to say about the female anatomy, whoâs married and has a daughter, who always says heâs the proud son of a single mother?  and what does abuse look like when itâs ânot abuseâ? what are these strange feelings you get around people, around men? what does it mean to be unsure? what does it mean when you werenât attacked or assaulted, but felt lured, groomed, preyed upon, exploited? what does it mean to feel rather than think, and what does it mean to find knowledge in those feelings? what does it mean to reflect, years later, and to feel, to know, that you could have been raped? what do we call that gray area that isnât even really a âgray areaâ? how do we make sense of the evolution of abuse? the most decadent elephant in the room, that fucking pandemic of subtlety that we never talk about or really write down for the world to see, yet know, in the deepest pits of our stomachs, to be the highest of all Truths. how do we go from thank God I wasnât fucking raped to I was almost fucking raped, and rape is the most incessant yet insidious weapon of terror, and almost everyone around me feels and knows that terror, lives with that fear, actively struggles against the aftermath of the terror that has been waged against them, and I want the fucking world to know that I will die speaking out against the desecration of our existence  Â
farah, i was wondering if we could talk about your experiences studying women's and gender studies in university. i am currently working towards that degree and in many ways it is relieving, helpful, liberating, but it also wears on my heart so much. it's so hard. i don't want to give up and i won't because i can't, but is there anything you did to help you through? anything that made it easier to carry?
Trigger warning
Womenâs, gender & sexuality studies is such a deeply painful field because we learn about so many tragedies and how those tragedies affect the body
I learned about genocide and war, human trafficking, rape and incest
I went mad with anxiety
I developed agoraphobic tendencies and struggled with disordered eating
All of this escalated during my upper-division classes
Other people I knew were having the time of their life
I was in bed on Saturday nights reading about sex tourism, feminicide (in an historical and contemporary context), and pornography
You start to feel sick and very alone
I think that pain was necessary for my growth, but I got really exhausted
Being a feminist is extremely tiring
Itâs a lot of shit to carry
We never talk about this enough
Itâs like â thereâs this strange, desensitizing impact academia has on us, and it got to me at times, but I never fully succumbed to it because my body knew better than to straight up disrespect all those knowledges
So, hereâs my 2 cents: there is no way out of the pain, there is no way of alleviating it or watering shit down or bleaching it so itâs cleaner, brighter, prettier, easier to handle
Endure with the field
It seems masochistic
And Iâm not asking you to be a masochist
Iâm asking you to feel
Iâm asking you to let yourself dive into this highly misunderstood and totally disrespected school of thought
Itâs hard and heavy work, and it isnât for everyone
Still, youâre there
Youâre connected
Never lose that connection
Everyone deserves a living wage, and that includes the hardworking folks who make your cheeseburgers and scrub the toilets you puke in. I donât care about your level of education or career experience â your privilege doesnât mean shit, and shouldnât be at the top of an absurd hierarchy that prioritizes white-collar workers. All workers from all classes must unite in order for this society to change. If you disagree, you sympathize with the reactionaries. If you donât have an opinion, you sympathize with the reactionaries.
