Kyla Ross was ready for a fresh start at Rio. Two of her teammates were walking on the left of her, and the other two were on the right. All of them were talking amongst themselves. Kyla was team captain this year. She had a shot at Olympic gold again. She was not to be overlooked. Over the past quad, Kyla had gone to Worlds three times. It was Worlds 2013 where she got her first individual world gold in beam and a bronze in uneven bars. Her three teammates, Katelyn Ohashi, Sarah Finnegan, and McKayla Maroney were so supportive. Katelyn had gotten the gold in the all-around and Sarah got fifth. McKayla debuted her Maroney, also the yurchenko triple. Of course she had won gold. In 2014 the USA team got gold. Kyla was on the team, along with Katelyn Ohashi, Sarah Finnegan, Lexie Priessman, Amelia Hundley, and McKayla Maroney. Kyla regained her beam gold along with a silver in the all-around, losing to Katelyn. McKayla got gold in the vault again, but everyone knew that. 2015, the United States got silver; losing to Russia. McKayla retired from gymnastics, leaving the team without the best vaulter ever. The team consisted of Kyla, Katelyn Ohashi, Lexie Priessman, Sarah Finnegan, Bailie Key, and surprisingly, Aly Raisman had made a comeback.  Kyla beat Katelyn in the all-around and regained her beam gold, with another bronze in uneven bars. That team was so close with each other. The Olympic team was so hard  to decide with a five-person limit. After a long day of competing, it was decided. Aly and McKayla had tried to come back, but they just couldnât do it. McKayla became an alternate, while Aly was not chosen at all. Now, the Fierce Five had gone their separate ways, though they were just as close as ever. Aly tried to come back to gymnastics; she had her own clothing line for gymnasts. Jordyn was working at the Karolyi ranch to help book times for teams to come and train. She of course was helping out with the gymnastics as well. McKayla became an actress and modeled for Alyâs clothing line. Gabby still did gymnastics for fun, but she was working at a non-profit to help children start gymnastics careers. All of them would come out for the Olympics and support Kyla and the rest of the team. Kyla was still doing gymnastics as her main thing. The Olympic team consisted of Kyla Ross, Katelyn Ohashi, Nica Hults, Bailie Key, and Carina Samuels, the girl who Kyla saw on the Today show. Two of them had never been to Worlds and Kyla was the only Olympian. It was amazing to have a second opportunity at this. She would try to get a medal in the all-around, beam, and uneven bars. Katelyn was her main rival in the all-around, and Katelyn was doing floor too. Nica was uneven bars, and Carina was trying floor and vault. Bailie, who was injured, decided to only take on vault. She was like the Rio McKayla Maroney, except without a yurchenko triple to call her own. Team Russia and Romania were still top contenders, along with China. Between the four of them, it was hard to say who would win the gold. There wasnât a nickname for these five girls like the Fierce Five, so they nicknamed themselves Rio Gymnastics Rockers. Each of them had an uniquely crafted nickname; Kyla became Cry-la, because she never showed tears out on the stage. Katelyn asked the girls, âWhich athlete do you want to meet the most now that weâre here?â They had just settled into their dorm rooms. Katelyn and Kyla were sharing a room. Nica, who was officially boy-crazy, said, âMaybe Tom Daley. Heâs really cute.â Kyla held her breath. None of these girls knew about her previous relationship with him. âIsnât he way older than you?â Bailie asked. It was like she became the new Aly, questioning everything. âHeâs, like, twenty-two years old. Heâs more of Katelyn and Kylaâs age. Though I donât think either one of them will ever meet him anyway.â Too late, Bailie, Kyla thought. Carina smirks, âI bet Kyla will meet him. And Katelyn too.â They kept going through the Olympic village, trying to spot some cool athletes to meet and say hello to. It was so warm in Rio. Everyone was already sweating. Plus, podium training was in an hour. The team would get their opportunity to explore after all the event finals, starting with vault and ending with floor. Soon, they were in team Great Britain territory. âKeep on the lookout for cute guys!â Nica declared. Kyla had to giggle. Her team was insane, but she loved them to pieces. Who couldnât? Their personalities were fiery, and each was passionate about one thing: gymnastics. Kyla couldnât wish for anything more. Someone had approached their clique. âHey,â the person said. The voice was so familiar to Kyla, with the British accent and towering body. She turned around. Tom Daley. The other four gymnasts just stared at him. Kyla muttered a, âHello, Tom. How are you?â âIâm great, thanks.â He inched closer and put his hands in his pockets. âNice to see you, Kyla. And the rest of the team, of course.â Their jaws dropped, except for Kylaâs. How could Tom Daley, British diver, be talking to one of them? âItâs been a long time since Iâve talked to you.â Now everyoneâs eyes were open; awestruck at this human being. âMind if I talk to you in private, Tom?â Kyla asked. Only Bailieâs eyebrows had the nerve to waggle at Kyla. âSure,â Tom said. They walked over to the side of the sidewalk, near a lush bush. Kylaâs eyes wandered back to the girls, who were gossiping among each other. She smiled. They were just too awesome. Tom interrupted her thoughts. âWhat do you need, love?â Every memory came back to her. The picture she took, their first dance, that night outside with his sweatshirt, the millions of Skype dates, the Kelloggâs tour, and then the shattering breakup. Everything was laid out between them. After they separated, Kyla trained harder and harder to block out every memory of him. She trained harder than ever before in her life. It paid off in the end. Kyla had wondered what he was doing during her weaker times. It seemed as if he was training as much as she was. âWhy do you have to greet me with every feeling in the world?â Kyla wasnât as insecure anymore. She was strong and independent. Everything she wasnât before. Tom sighed. âLook, Iâm sorry, Kyla. Iâve been regretting cheating on you ever since. I just wish we could be friends, at the very least. Can we?â Kyla inhaled sharply. To be friends with him would be amazing. Thatâs how it shouldâve been from day one. But how hard it would it be to keep feelings away from each other? Tom was the only person she had ever loved and been in a romantic relationship with. To hold back was a challenge as tough as the Olympics itself. Kyla was ready to accept the challenge. âTom, Iâd love to be friends. But just stay friends. And on one condition.â âWhat is it?â âNo coming to each otherâs competitions. Thatâd just distract us.â Kyla held her hand out. âIs that a deal?â He shook her hand firmly. The electric current between them was still running high after all these years. âVery well, Kyla. I hope that you get the gold!â And Kyla would, with a gold in the all-around and beam. âI wish that you get gold too.â Tom did; a gold in the individual 10 m platform. As Kyla left to her group, she grinned like she had just dismounted off a flawless beam routine. She was as good as anyone else. No one was better than her. And she believed it.
