Born on this day: Cesar Romero (15 February 1907 – 1 January 1994). The suavely handsome half Cuban Latin lover’s long career encompassed everything from co-starring with Marlene Dietrich in Josef von Sternberg’s 1936 masterpiece The Devil is a Woman to dancing with Carmen Miranda to portraying Zorro in the fifties to playing The Joker in the campy sixties Batman TV series (pictured) to co-starring with Divine and Tab Hunter in Paul Bartel’s Lust in the Dust (1984) to appearing in episodes of Murder She Wrote and Falcon Crest! Off-screen, the unapologetic “confirmed bachelor” regularly escorted friends like Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck and Ginger Rogers to premieres and nightclubs when they were between husbands. As you can see here, Romero famously refused to shave his trademark mustache to play The Joker, instead concealing it (not very successfully!) with foundation.
Apollonia Kotero is an American actress, singer, and former model who shot to international fame in 1984 as Prince’s co‑star in Purple Rain and as the frontwoman of the pop‑funk trio Apollonia 6. Her two most significant performances are unquestionably Purple Rain—where her presence, charisma, and musical work helped define the film’s cultural impact—and her role on the primetime series Falcon Crest, which showcased her ability to transition from music‑driven stardom into dramatic television. Those projects remain the clearest expression of her brief but vivid moment as an ’80s pop‑culture icon.

John Saxon
John Saxon (born Carmine Orrico in Brooklyn, New York on August 5, 1936) was an American actor who studied acting with esteemed acting coach Stella Adler. Notorious talent agent Henry Willson, who gave him his stage name, saw his picture on the cover of a detective magazine when he was doing modelling work as a teen. He soon contracted with Universal Studios. His first lead role in a low-budget teen film, Rock, Pretty Baby (1956), was an unexpected success and established him as a teen idol. Fluent in Italian, he also made many movies in Italy. Despite his good work with major directors, he mostly had supporting roles. Having a black belt in karate, his defining role came with the Warner Bros. martial arts film Enter the Dragon (1973) as the playboy martial artist Roper. Since the 1970s, he established himself as a character actor, appearing in a number of horror films, with his last onscreen appearance in the independent film The Extra (1957).
He died of complications from pneumonia, on July 25, 2020, aged 83, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he had resided for several years.
