I really disagree with people who say Opheliac was juvenile and childish. While I did relate to Opheliac as a teenager, I felt like I didn't truly understand the lyrics until I got older and went through abuse, domestic violence, constant sexual harassment and then…the lyrics kind of hit me like a truck. Even lines that seemed silly like, 'If I Photoshop you out of every picture I could Go quietly, quiet But would that do any good' just made more sense. It also became more clear to me that Opheliac is really an album about abuse and domestic violence. It's like, I kind of knew this as a teenager but it didn't really sink in until I was a much older adult that went through stuff. I feel like the overemphasis on the 'Asylum' in interviews and blog posts really sidelined the depth Opheliac had but I get that EA probably struggled to talk about her experiences and could only do so through performance. TAFWVG journals also felt heavilly censored and filtered, probably so she didn't get sued or feared being too overexposed. There was really so much there, if we could move past how distracting the whole Asylum sideshow was. The album was so lyrically and musically complex. At the end of the day, I think EA felt safer talking about her experiences in the psych ward than her experiences of abuse which is why the asylum quickly took over Opheliac. I guess, it is what it is.
