St. Ostara, which likes to champion themselves as keepers of concepts the human world has long since discarded, still rules under a partial monarchy. The original founding families from various species still hold titles of lords and ladies, creating a legislative committee that does more squabbling than governing. One lucky family sits above them all though, as the King and Queen of St. Ostara - although the family that has held that position has changed so frequently throughout the years, they’ve long forgotten who originally held the position.

At any point, a noble family may challenge the current ruling family and attempt to overthrow them - historically through a coliseum-style battle of magic, strength, and wit. For centuries, the royal family was switching nearly every few years, leaving destruction and unrest in their wake. Eventually, the royals feuds and dramatics became background noise, ignored by the rest of the city, while their economy and social structure consistently took hits with each change in ruling. All of this changed five years ago, when the underdog Weaver Family took over, grasping their first ruling since the city’s inception nearly three-hundred years ago. They re-built crumbling buildings in New Salem, invested in universities and schools, and for once, citizen approval was at an all-time high.

Too afraid at finally pushing the citizens into revolting by disrupting the new-found peace, the other families have begrudgingly resigned to letting the ___ family rule. But as time wanes on, it’s becoming clear the __ family isn’t experienced or adept enough to handle the sprawling city-state. Minority species, like goblins and familiars, flourish under their rule, but clash with older species like deities and unicorns, whose diminishing numbers continue to decline under a rule that neglects tradition and embraces new, novel human concepts. Left with the overwhelming debt of the other royal families who spent without blinking an eye, the King and Queen are secretly dipping their fingers in the illegal Fighting Ring and Pegasus Racing in order to fund for infrastructure changes.

Paranoid that at any moment another family could strike for their chance at the crown, rumors swell in the city of the existence of spies employed by the King and Queen - who dispel negative conspiracy about the royal family and warn them of any potential unrest.

Meanwhile, the other bloodlines bide their time and wait.

A note about this subplot’s positions: This subplot is very open, and adaptable by who takes characters for it. Upon request, we may be willing to change the species of a noble family. A family can be as big or as large as is wanted. Once a family is taken, we will ask the playing members to write a brief synopsis of their family’s history. These slots are open for anyone to take, but if a family member is already in play, we strongly recommend communicating with their writer first.
