it's indescribably scary, as an author, to imagine your fics being seen by those you write about, because the whole point of rpf is that you're inventing scenarios that don't really exist. it's an outlet, or an imagined world, not something that needs to breach containment to the real world.

i've never intended for my works to be seen by the people i write about, because

that would likely make them extremely uncomfortable

it would make me extremely uncomfortable

it breaches the distance between author and celebrity and gets rid of the anonymity, closed space, and fandom-sphere that we're comfortable with.

i genuinely have no idea why the fuck anyone would send death threats to someone over works of fiction that are kind to their celebrities in the narrative, and about genuine connection.

that being said, it seems to happen quite a lot. i'm the first 3-5 most kudos'd works on a few ukyt ships, and the idea of the people i ship ever seeing what i've written is, again, terrifying. the ukyt fandom, as i understand it, is predominantly made of straight males/lad culture subscribers, and though there are a fair number of women and gays like myself in it, the backlash would be insane, and i'm well aware of that. i'd probably leave.

and, also, i hate to say it, but given how many straight rpf works are written on ao3 which don't get death threats (including the huge number of x reader fics) i would say that the people sending death threats to rose are exhibiting a different kind of hate, and it makes me incredibly sad---actually, no, angry. very angry.

the point of me saying all this isn't to make others indignant, it's to remind us of the very real risks that we take and ask that we all protect each other. don't share rpf stuff outside of these spheres, don't go talking to celebrities about other people's works.

and more importantly, try not to let a bunch of homophobic or plain disgusting hate messages and death threats make you feel like hiding or disappearing. writing about two people falling in love has never been a crime, and writing about men driving really fast and being gay and loving each other does not warrant threats against your life.

please take care of yourselves, message people (me if you want, i don't care if we don't know each other) asking for help if you want or need it.
