Personal HC is that we, the player, are some kind of Entity ourselves. Not like Mr. Lopee, but more like...something symbiotic, in a way. Or parasitic.
We jump from one Expendable to the next, taking control and guiding them through the game, although I'd think "forcing" them would be more appropriate, considering how often we deliberately go out of our way to get ourselves killed, just for that research or even for fun.
Sebastian, Mr. Lopee, the other "fourth wall breaks". It's because they know, can perhaps see us, that...apparition clinging onto some of the expendables. After all, they're just our vessels, so why address the monkey if the organ grinder is right there?
The expendables know, too. They talk to us, try to reason with us, ask us for mercy, ask us to get them out, to let them live.
Do we listen?
No. We wear them like gloves, force ourselves into their minds, and then discard them when they are no longer useful. Sometimes we find one we like or think has potential and we'll revive them, make them go back to likely die again, in more horrifying ways.
Why?
Are we searching for something? The One who can make it to the end? But if so, when we get the crystal and escape, why jump back in? Are we just so jaded to the suffering or are we trying to achieve a specific end?
Or is it all because this is a game to us? Something to pass the time, to alleviate a bit of boredom? Are we that cruel, that sadistic? No better than Urbanshade?
Are we trying to help or are we monsters, too?
(Also, to lighten this up a lil, when we're a ghost, that's us, not the Expendable we were currently piloting. They get peace and Seb gets to shoot us directly for once!)
That ended up longer than I expected so uh, TLDR: HC is that we, the player, are an entity that piggybacks on different expendables in order to play the game, rather than being a single expendable caught in a loop.

I need to see more expendable art with less malleable censors.
MAKE THE CENSOR MORPH!! It's probably client-sided looking!! don't wrap it around their face MAKE IT CHANGE SHAPES DEPENDING ON HOW THEY'RE FACED!!!
if their head tilts? make it bigger!!! they turn? smaller!!! make it look like their identity cannot be known!!!
oh these were removed hmm
eyefestation and expendable
silly expendable choices
