We take a small break from your daily Oc and character posts to present…. Wait, another Pokémon???
Yes! It’s Excavalier! As someone who grew up on Gen 4, I was admittedly quite stubborn on wanting to like Gen 5 when it came out. But I still remember being blown away by the Unova Pokémon designs as a kid, especially the bug types! But I remember exclusively drawing Excavalier and Accelgor in my notebooks in school, even gifting a drawing of them to my teacher lol. I still remember being upset not being able to have both Pokémon in my game cause I didn’t have another DS or both titles to trade/evolve them! Haha. It was a little hard ‘breaking’ the personality of Excavalier due to the many moving parts in its design, but at the end I focused more on the rendering to test the waters of painting metal again.
Btw, I’m super happy a lot of people really loved Natu and Xatu’s drawings! It tickles me that an obscure Pokémon suddenly gained interest! I couldn’t be happier my drawings somehow moved people this way, even if I drew them for the silly fun of it lol. Thanks for enjoying my work! Drawing these really obscure Pokémon I liked, even as a kid, almost feels like I’m visiting an old friend again. I don’t know why they stuck with me a a kid, but perhaps it’s true that every Pokémon can be someone’s favourite!
(Oh hey! I also do comissions on Pokémon as well! You can check out the link in my bio for my commissions website where you can request a commission via Google Forms or KoFi order! I do not accept commission requests via DM’s, posts or asks due to a high rise of scams around Tumblr. The forms and Ko Fi just makes it more official and safer for us!)

This one will actually be a pretty simple one, just because there is actually not a lot of information available about this species’ behavior. This, unfortunately, forces me to weigh more heavily on the danger that they may post to humans, which earns excavaliers an unfortunate “C” ranking. That isn’t to say that there isn’t a silver lining, though, which we will get into.
While they are larger than you may expect, measuring in at just over three feet tall and weighing over seventy pounds, their apparent ability to levitate means that mobility won’t be too much of an issue for an excavalier. As for getting them where you need them to go, however, you may run into some problems, as they aren’t exactly the easiest pokémon to carry around. For this and other reasons we will get into, I must emphasize that one should only adopt an exacavalier if they are absolutely certain that they will be able to invest in the training they need to ensure that they get along with you and can understand what you need from them.
Excavaliers aren’t said to be particularly aggressive towards humans, and indeed they are popular both historically and contemporarily in places like the Galar Region, where one is depicted in a famous painting, for example (Sword, Shield). This doesn’t mean that they aren’t dangerous, of course! These pokémon are capable of moving at pretty high speeds (Black, Shield), they use their lanced to jab and batter enemies with dangerous moves like X-Scissor, Iron Head, and Giga Impact. Given their size, speed, and fearlessness, an attacking excavaliers is something you should be very careful about. These moves may lower this pokémons’ overall score in my algorithm, but there is actually a silver lining: excavaliers have evolved for defense, not offense.
Excavaliers are heavily armored pokémon, each having evolved from a karrablast upon stealing a steel-like shell covering from a shelmet (White, White2/Black2, X, Y, OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire, Sword). They have been observed using their lances to fight primarily if they believe they need to protect themselves (Black2/White2, X, OmegaRuby, Sword). This means that if you are gentle and calm around an excavalier, the chances of them outright attacking you, while not zero, are very low. This is another indicator that, with the right training, an excavalier may make a fairly safe companion.
This doesn’t get you completely out of the woods, though: problems can still come up when your excavalier feels the need to protect you and your home from an ultimately harmless “intruder”, like a mailman. Ultimately, though many may be able to make it work with proper training and knowledge about excavalier behavior, I can’t offer a blanket recommendation for this pokémon. Hopefully, in years to come, researchers will be able to give us a better understanding of this peculiar species’ behavior and needs so that we can better judge how well-suited they are for companionship with humans.
The lunch rush has passed, replaced with a spectacle of two trainers trading fists for the sake of their pokemons' honor. Ayumi frowns as she watches a trainer take a fist to the face.
"I'm gonna lose this bet," Ayumi groans. Rio raises a half smile away from Ayumi's gaze, a tiny bit of triumph cracks through her lips.
But she drops her smile as quickly as it came, instead pausing to look at Ayumi's face as it contorted with "oohs" and "aah's" after each physical exchange. It was close to the end of the shift, and Ray might be on his way back. Now might be the best time to ask.
Rio's first reaction was to internally sigh with relief along with Ayumi, who did the same. Her next reaction, however, was to internally sigh out of frustration. She was, in fact, from the same Matsumoto clan she knew from a long, long time ago. There's no way Ray didn't know.
"Does Ray know about that whole business? Did he treat you differently once he found out?" Rio asked, raising an eyebrow.
"He knows, and…" Ayumi paused, giving it some thought as she thought back to a couple of years ago.
"Now that you mention it, yeah. He did start acting a little different," Ayumi furrowed her brows. When she looked at Rio for a comment, she met her confused look with an expectant one. She continued.
"He started actin'… nicer? Not the kinda nice where he's hittin' on me or trying to suck up to me 'cause I come from important history or whatever. But he looked kinda…" Ayumi stops, pausing as she remembers the late night noodle runs she had with her husband and her son.
She remembers the nights she'd catch him looking at her direction with a deep seated sorrow. She remembers how his shoulders would sag and his eyes would wander over her face to look for a resemblance to someone he knew before he shook himself and returned to his usual stoic face.
"He looked kinda sad. Did he know someone from my family?" Ayumi asks slowly.
"He did." Rio looks away. She searches within herself to find the right words to be vague enough to respond, but detailed enough to satisfy her question.
"Gotcha," Ayumi softly says, getting the idea that this was something she shouldn't press. She decided to take it a different direction.
"Well, it's fair you tell me somethin' since you keep askin' me all sorts of questions," Ayumi smiles.
"Why are you askin' so many questions about Ray? Don't ya two work together? He doesn't tell you nothin', huh?"
Rio's heart quickens, unexpectedly put on the spot. Again, she thinks about how to be simultaneously vague and truthful.
"I talk about him a lot because…"
"No, it's just that you need a last name to be fully registered in Castelia if you don't want to deal with any pokeballs. I just stole his last name, and I guess he stole Tai's," Rio says.
"I can't tell if you're worried for him or tryin' to find out what he's been doin'," Ayumi nervously laughs, looking slightly uncomfortable at the idea of unintentionally throwing Ray under the bus.
"Both. He hasn't been himself, recently. I guess I'm worried for him," Rio mutters begrudgingly.
"You must've dumped him pretty hard, huh?" Ayumi laughs. Rio looks away awkwardly.
"It was a mutual breakup."
"… So he must've dumped you pretty hard, huh?" Ayumi laughs again, and Rio quickly shoots a frown at her. Ayumi laughs harder.
"Just messin' with ya."
Rio huffs. It technically was Ray to first suggest that they separate, even after all the ordeals they went through together. It's not that she didn't disagree with the decision, but-
Before Rio could think more about it, the two are cut off as the trainers take a seat with pained expressions.
"Dammit, there goes five hundred pokeyen. Coming right up!" Ayumi smiles.

(@ask-impatient-samurott: Kappa@Ayumi) "Oof, it's been a while since I've had ramen. I'll take a Miso." [Kappa finally notices that there's another Samurott behind the counter. And that she's VERY pretty.] "OH- I'm sorry for being so rude- er, blunt. Could I please have a bowl of Miso Ramen?"

Taking a break from drawing things for other people to make more knight character concept art.
This one is a gijinka for Excavalier. He's currently under development, but you're going to find him pretty closely linked in with Dederick's story pretty soon!
