we know that man never gets over anything in his life & is equally pathetic when it comes to romance, he can act as unbothered as he wants but he still thinks about his ex partner in his most sexually vulnerable moments (maybe because they’re the only person that’s ever willingly touched him like that & the only person he still craves to do so .. who knows!)

he’s so stubborn but let there be any inkling that his partner regrets it he’ll come crawling back likely faster than he can admit to himself because what is he if not a yearner at heart

I agree that he's a big yearner.

And he's also easily resigned if a relationship is broken up. He won't pursue the other one... but if there's a chance that they might come back, he could totally welcome them again (or throw himself at them, as slowly as he can because he wants to still look composed and unbothered)(and maybe protect his heart).

It's certain that their past sexual life might haunt him, especially if it was good. Because sex is way more than sex for Severus. It's a moment of deep vulnerability and connection.

I'd say the only no-go could be if the relationship it ended badly AND if he had healed enough to not minimize how shitty it was. If he's not idolizing his ex-partner he might be able to move on and reject them if they came back. Or maybe they'd fuck again a few times but he wouldn't let them in again (this is me wishing he would do that because he deserves a good partner).
