Question: How to off as many protagonists as possible?
[Warning: Contains spoilers for a story that hasn't been written yet]
So I'm still outlining the second half of Swashbucklers of the Magic Kingdom (which I need to outline in order to outline the first half), and I have managed to get all my characters--protagonists and antagonists--into the same building for the climax. Which is exactly where the Big Bad wants them to be.
Because if their evil plan to get what they want through blackmail and dirty political maneuvering fails, they always have Plan B, which, being villainous, means good old-fashioned murder. But how to do it? I am torn between three options:
A large cache of gunpowder hidden in the vaults below the venue.
A bunch of hidden crossbowmen up on the balcony seats.
Set the venue on fire.
The original concept was to use the gunpowder. Unfortunately, I and the protagonists changed the venue from the National Assembly building to Notre Dame Cathedral, which is an important location thematically and the story will end in that location anyway, so I might as well make it the location of the whole last act. Now, as currently envisioned, the cathedral was not supposed to be the gathering spot for the final act--that was the National Assembly building--so if I did decide to use the gunpowder, it would have to be moved in-story from its original location below the National Assembly to the sewers beneath the cathedral. And since it's been raining a ton in-story, the sewers and catacombs below the cathedral will be flooded, which means that it's not the best place for a bomb. Now, it could still work if I time everything right, but right now using gunpowder just seems too convoluted to be the work of an evil chessmaster and more like a saving throw. So I'm leaning away from it. The idea of using crossbowmen hiding in the balconies is also a decent idea--it requires less resources, after all--but the main problem is that the gathering in the cathedral is a gathering of the Royalty of the Magic Kingdom--kings, queens, princes and princesses are the only ones allowed, and there's too many of them to permit civilian spectators in the space even if they did allow it, which in this case they would not. The assassins would only be able to get in if they could disguise themselves as spectators, so that wouldn't work either. Setting the cathedral on fire, meanwhile, would tie the Swashbuckler's universe to the real world a bit more (Notre Dame did catch fire, after all), and would tie very thematically to the Hamlet Incident, an important backstory element that involved a fire in a crowded theatre and the ensuing stampede (one guess as to which Disney movie's characters are involved). It also has the benefit of requiring almost no infrastructure besides the Big Bad and a lighter, an item easily smuggled in by someone who's supposed to be there anyway. The fact that everyone will be locked inside means that I still get to have the race-against-time element that I originally wanted in the scene, except that instead of racing against a bomb detonation I would be racing to beat smoke and a crashing roof. And even after I save several characters I can still trap another inside for the final duel. I'm liking this solution so far...
