Eddie had never thought he’d have something like this.
He’d long known that your life could change with a moment’s notice, even well before the Upside Down had crashed into his life and nearly completely wrecked it. But this… it’s taken a while to get here, but now that he’s here, that they are here, it’ll be taken from him while he kicks and screams and shows how dangerous he can be in defending something he loves.
Shaking his head, he banishes the thought, nothing that dark has no place to shadow the happiness of today, a perfect winter’s day in December with snow on the ground and clear blue skies, with a house and a yard full of love.
The snowman is coming along nicely, the shape traditional and the building quite energetic. Steve — beautiful and unexpected Steve, who still manages to surprise Eddie every single day — is helping, because of course he is. Eddie doesn’t hide the fact that he he’s admiring Steve’s strength as he picks up the smallest snowball, which will be the snowman's head, and sets it in place. Then that beautiful man, Eddie’s beautiful man, picks up their little girl and easily hefts her up on his shoulders as she giggles.
Steve raises to his fullest height, holding onto her tightly, always careful. Here head is thrown back as she continues to giggle and her knitted hat gets knocked off her head, releasing her mess of dark curls.
Elly looks like theirs, even when she isn’t, in the ways that matter to some, but Eddie long ago learned that sharing blood doesn’t always mean family.
Eddie should go join them, and he will, but for the moment he is rooted to the spot, stood on their porch steps and looking on at the miracle that is his family.
Then someone throws a snow ball at him and it’s everyone for themselves.
