Embracing the Magick of the Mundane
We’ve all looked at our lives and felt it; the persistent pang of disappointment. We wonder how we ended up here, why we didn’t reach higher, try harder, earn more, etc. etc. etc. We allow these thoughts to weigh us down, and make us doubt our worth. But what if you are not the problem?
The majority of us raised in the western world were told we would (and should) achieve some kind of “greatness” in our adulthoods. How many times did you hear as a child, whether from a parent, teacher, or even a TV show, that you can be whatever you want to be? We were told we could achieve anything; the presidency, the cure for cancer, fame, glory, profound social or ecological change. But the truth is, the vast majority of people in the world live simple, unglamorous lives. And that’s okay!
The focus (dare I say obsession) with future greatness deprives the present of meaning. What I wish we’d been told as children is something more along the lines of “your life, whatever it becomes, or whatever you make of it, is beautiful.” Because it’s far too easy to spend what little, precious time we have straining for the future, and ignoring the beauty of now.
I see similar self-doubt and dissatisfaction in the Magickal community; practitioners wondering whether they performed a ritual correctly, or whether they’re successful, good, “devout” enough. Some wonder why they don’t see more profound results, and blame themselves, or some sort of shortcoming. But the beauty of the craft is that each path is different, and individual to the practitioner. You are the Magick. Any tools, or spells you use are just representations of the power within yourself. And Magick, like life, is often subtle. It won’t slap you across the face, or demand your attention. To see the beauty in it, and the truth, you have to quiet the mind and listen.
So, Wild Ones, look for beauty. Find magic in motes of dust in sunbeams, or frost on blades of grass. Place intention into any mundane task, whether it be cleaning, cooking, driving, etc. --- Oh, you put a pinch of cinnamon in your soup for prosperity? BAM! Spell. --- There are no rules to your path, other than the ones you set, and the only person from whom you need permission is yourself.
In short, you’re doing great. Right now.
Love and Light. Stay wild,
