3:50pm “Captain America Arrives” With a van, a car, two trucks and two trailers loaded and the CHP on a megaphone shouting at us to get out, we stared at each other in disbelief that we were being ordered to leave animals behind. @_mother_of_chickens edged the truck slowly up the driveway to where Corinne was ready to hop in and ride in the back to ensure the safety of the goats and sheep. Then a loud “bang” as Barnaby (goat) and Huckleberry (sheep) panicked and jumped from the back of the truck. Barnaby easily untangled himself from the lead rope and ran down the driveway where he was apprehended and loaded into the crowded van with @marjib, Bob (donkey), and crates full of chickens. Huck however had fallen hard, and the look that Guido gave Danielle as he quickly untied the rope around his neck now choking him warned her that things did not look good. Huck was bleeding from his mouth, too frightened to be led to another vehicle… a 200lb sheep frantically digging his heels in and refusing to budge. We pushed and shoved, roped and drug, but he would not move. As the other cars were leaving the driveway and the fire inched closer to the property, Danielle looked up in disbelief as @_california_chris_ appeared out of nowhere like Captain America, bent down, and with one easy scoop, picked Huck up in his arms and put him in the front seat of Josh’s car. The awe and gratitude of that moment will not be forgotten. Guido hopped in the driver’s side with two dogs in the back and a sheep riding shotgun (who proceeded to headbutt the windshield twice out of fear, breaking the glass but remaining otherwise unscathed). Driving with a sheep in one’s passenger seat is not for the faint of heart. And so, as sirens blared and officers yelled, we pulled out of our driveway, opened the property gates and shouted toward the other animals, begging them to follow us out... #captainamerica #everydayhero #riverfire Photo of Guido and Huck after they had made it to safety.
