Plant of the Day
Thursday 8 December 2022
The biennial Oenothera biennis (evening primrose, fever plant, field primrose, four o'clock, night willowherb, cure-all) produces erect seed-heads as a winter feature once the fragrant, yellow flowers are over. This plant is native to North America but has naturalised in the UK. The flowers open in the evening and attract night-flying pollinators such as moths.

Do you just LOVE (or even like) cooking or making medicine with Evening Primrose? Please share your ways! I tried eating these roots last year once and wasn’t impressed, but I want to give them another chance with your recommendations. Native to the forests of eastern and central North America, various indigenous tribes used (and sometimes still use, I imagine) this evening-flowering biennial for food, strengthening, and healing. As is the case with many indigenous American species, like the dahlia, this species was brought to Europe as a garden beauty and a novelty - and then its food uses were much later “discovered”. That said, I rarely hear of people still using it, but it is mentioned in Wolf D. Storl’s “A Curious History of Vegetables” as one of his favorite vegetables. It very present in our fields, and I’d love to make use of it rather than sending it to the compost bin when it’s in the way of our crop plans. Also, it is part of a flower clock that @mill.hollow is making since it blooms at a certain time of the day. All parts are apparently edible. Please share your love for this plant in present tense! #eveningprimrose #wildfoods #wildmedicine (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-xE_24gsr2/?igshid=1hv9gfh09gpy2

Night blooms. 🥀🌙 Did you know that there are some #flowers that only open during the evening? They are pollinated by #bats 🦇 and therefore metal as HELL.
