Apparently, me and my brother cracked the code on How To Write Good™️ Het Ships:
@youcannotkillmeiamsubhuman and I were talking about how most of the best het couples started out "exploiting" each other.
I mean that in the sense that they had a deal of some kind. A "you do this for me, I'll do this for you, then we go our separate ways" sorta thing, you know? A business exchange.
The way they go about it will oftentimes be different, but eventually, they realize they care more about each other than whatever deal they had, they fall in love, etc, etc, you know how it goes.
BUT it's the part about them having a "strictly business" kind of relationship at first before devolving into love that both amuses me and intrigues me. Especially since there are so many couples that follow this pattern.
Tiana x Naveen. Anna x Kristoff. Eugene x Rapunzel. Nick x Judy. Rumi x Jinu. Uzi x N. Yor x Loid. Wednesday x Tyler. The list goes on.
The only time this pattern doesn't apply is when it's teenagers. Like Izuku and Ochaco, or Callum and Rayla (Callum and Rayla might seem like they were trying to get something out of each other, but they ultimately had the same end goal so it doesn't count). I have no clue why it doesn't apply to them.
Generally speaking though, a lot of the best het ships started out as solely business partners trying to achieve something with the sometimes reluctant help of the each other.
That's incredibly funny and we should do it more often.
