The next morning, Nevermore was humming with its usual quiet chaos — boots squeaking on the stone floors, ravens cawing outside, Enid gossiping about something sparkly.
And somewhere between the breakfast tables and the bee shed, you realized:
you couldn’t stop smiling.
Not the polite, practiced smile you gave teachers.
Not the teasing smirk you used to give Eugene.
But the soft, uncontrollable kind that showed up whenever you thought of him saying, “Hey, it’s our thing.”
__________________________________________
You found him exactly where you expected — in the courtyard, crouched near a patch of flowers with one of his bees perched on his hand.
“Are you aware you look like a Disney princess right now?” you said.
He startled slightly, then laughed, brushing a curl out of his eyes. “You say that like it’s an insult.”
“It’s not,” you said honestly. “Just… very on brand for you.”
Eugene grinned. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
There was a comfortable quiet after that — not awkward, not forced. Just you and him, the morning light, and the soft buzz of his bees in the distance.
When you sat beside him, your knee brushed his, and you expected him to pull away like before. He didn’t.
Instead, he tilted his head, smiling that warm, slightly shy smile that made your chest ache. “So… what happens now?”
You blinked. “Now?”
“Yeah. You like me. I like you. Do we, uh…” He trailed off, waving his free hand vaguely. “Start holding hands on purpose now?”
You bit back a laugh. “Is that your way of asking me out?”
“Maybe.”
You smiled and gently reached for his hand. “Then yeah. We start holding hands on purpose.”
His fingers laced with yours — tentative at first, then firmer, more certain. “Cool,” he said softly, almost to himself.
__________________________________________
From then on, the weeks blurred into something that felt… easy.
You studied together, wandered the Nevermore gardens, and sat under the old willow where he’d tell you about his bees while you teased him just enough to make him roll his eyes.
He’d started growing out of his awkwardness, little by little — taller, more confident, still adorably Eugene but with a steadier kind of glow.
Sometimes you caught him looking at you when he thought you weren’t paying attention, that same soft grin tugging at his lips. And every time, your heart stung in the best way.
__________________________________________
One evening, after everyone had gone inside, you stayed behind in the courtyard. The air smelled faintly of honey and rain.
Eugene appeared beside you, quiet but certain, slipping his jacket around your shoulders. “You’ll catch a cold,” he murmured.
You looked up at him — his curls messy from the wind, his glasses slipping down slightly. You smiled. “You’re such a mom.”
He chuckled. “Guess you’ll just have to live with that.”
You tilted your head, pretending to think. “Hmm. I think I can manage.”
He laughed softly, then his expression turned gentler. “You know… I never thought I’d get here. Not with you.”
“Here?”
“Yeah. With you sitting next to me instead of running away from the bees.”
You smiled, leaning closer. “Guess we both surprised ourselves.”
His voice dropped to a whisper. “Yeah. In the best way.”
And when he kissed you — quick, sweet, a little nervous — it felt like everything around you slowed down. The hum of bees, the smell of rain, the warmth of his hand against yours.
__________________________________________
Later, when you walked back to the dorms again — hand in hand, for real this time — you caught sight of your reflections in the dark window glass.
You weren’t sure when “The Bee Boy of Doom” had become the boy you couldn’t stop thinking about, but you knew one thing for sure:
You’d fallen for him — completely, ridiculously, hopelessly — and somehow, it felt like he’d been waiting for you to catch up all along.
WHERE ARE ALL THE EUGENE FICS?@?, WHERE IS MY BOY?!?! I NEED MY BOY!!!
Wednesday: I’m not mean. Name one mean thing I’ve done.
Pugsley: When we were younger, you convinced me eggs weren't real.
Wednesday: They’re not.
Pugsley: Haha, very funny.
Wednesday: I’m serious, didn’t you hear?
Pugsley: No, what happened?
Eugene: Why would you fall for this again?
Pugsley: Anytime I would do the laundry growing up, I would watch the water fill it up and I’d imagine there were little people on my clothes and then when the water came and got them they’d drown.
Eugene: What?

__________________________________________
You told yourself you weren’t going to let the feelings get to you.
You could still be normal around Eugene. You could still hang out without overthinking it. You could still help him at the hives without staring too long at the way his curls escaped from under his beekeeping hood.
At least… you thought you could.
__________________________________________
It was a cloudy afternoon, the kind that made the Nevermore courtyard feel like a muted postcard. You were helping Eugene replace some hive frames — an easy job, except the bees were a little restless from the weather.
“Careful,” Eugene said, holding out a gloved hand to guide you around the open box. “They’re in a mood today.”
You smirked. “Sounds like you and the bees have something in common.”
“Hey,” he said, mock-offended, “I’m delightful company.”
“You’re something, Ottinger.”
He grinned, and for a moment, the air between you felt warm despite the chill.
__________________________________________
The warmth didn’t last long.
While you were lifting one of the frames, a bee got under your glove and stung you right on the wrist.
“Ah—!” You jerked back, nearly dropping the frame. Eugene swooped in, steadying it with one hand and pulling you away with the other.
“You okay? Lemme see.” His voice was all concern now, and you hated how much that made your heart race.
“It’s fine,” you said, but you still let him take your hand. His gloved fingers were careful as he peeled the material back and checked the sting.
“Still got the stinger in there,” he muttered. “Hold still.”
You did — maybe too still — as he used the edge of his hive tool to flick it out.
__________________________________________
“You didn’t have to—” you started, but Eugene cut you off.
“‘Course I did. Can’t have you hating bees because of one bad day.”
You snorted. “Pretty sure you’re the only reason I don’t already.”
The words slipped out before you could stop them. His head tilted, eyes searching yours through the mesh of his hood.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
You could’ve laughed it off. You could’ve teased him. But instead, you took a breath.
“It means… I like you, Eugene. More than I meant to.”
He blinked. “Like… like-like?”
You smiled faintly. “Yeah. Like-like.”
There was a beat of silence, and then his grin spread, bright and completely unguarded.
“Well, uh… that works out, because I’ve been like-liking you since the day you pulled honeycomb off my boot.”
You laughed, relief spilling through you. “That’s the least romantic thing anyone’s ever said to me.”
He shrugged. “Hey, it’s our thing.”
__________________________________________
Later, as you walked back toward the dorms, he brushed his hand against yours — tentative at first, then more certain when you didn’t pull away
the sky was still grey, and you had no idea what tomorrow would bring.
But for now, you were exactly where you wanted to be

TRIP AND FALL FOR YOU
Pairing: Eugene Ottinger x Fem!Reader
CW: Slow burn, mild teasing, light angst, eventual fluff, friends-to-lovers
A/N: English isn’t my first language, so please be patient with me
__________________________________________
You didn’t set out to make Eugene Ottinger your favorite target.
But on your first week at Nevermore Academy, you found him in the quad wearing oversized goggles, holding a jar of bees, and mumbling something about “hive harmony.” It was… weird. And you, still figuring out where you fit among the werewolves, sirens, and psychics, decided “weird” was safer to laugh at than understand.
So you made little digs. Nothing cruel — just comments, delivered with a smirk.
“Careful, Ottinger, one day those bees are gonna unionize and take you out.”
“Is this a club or a cult?”
“Do you talk to actual people, or just the bees?”
He never seemed to take offense. He’d just push his glasses up and say something equally bizarre in return, as if you’d just joined in on a joke only he fully understood.
__________________________________________
That all changed the day of the beekeeping mishap.
It was late autumn, the air sharp with the scent of damp leaves. You were crossing the courtyard when you heard a commotion near the hives. There was Eugene, flailing — not because of an attack, but because he’d dropped a whole frame of honeycomb onto his boot.
You couldn’t help yourself. “That’s one way to get stuck here.”
Instead of bristling, Eugene grinned. “Want to help me before my foot becomes part of the hive?”
You hesitated. And then, for reasons you couldn’t explain, you crouched down and pried the honeycomb off his boot. It was sticky, warm, and oddly heavy.
“Thanks,” he said, brushing himself off. “You’ve got a steady hand. Ever considered joining the club?”
You rolled your eyes. “Pretty sure bees and I wouldn’t mix.”
“They might surprise you.”
That was the first time he’d looked at you like you weren’t just some sarcastic voice in the background. And it was unsettling.
__________________________________________
Over the next few weeks, you found yourself lingering near the hives more often. Not to join, of course — just… watching.
Eugene had this bizarre way of talking to his bees, narrating their “daily gossip” like a soap opera. And you realized something: he wasn’t just eccentric. He was genuinely happy doing what he loved. In a place like Nevermore — where most people guarded themselves behind sharp edges and whispered alliances — that was rare.
One day, you even accepted his offer to help check the frames. The two of you worked in companionable silence, the hum of the bees filling the air. At one point, Eugene glanced at you and said, “You know, you’re not as scary as you try to be.”
You arched an eyebrow. “And you’re not as hopeless as you look.”
He laughed. “Progress.”
__________________________________________
By the time spring rolled around, you’d somehow become… friends.
You shared lunch on the quad sometimes. You partnered on the occasional group project. You even sat with him in the library during a particularly bad thunderstorm, distracting him from the noise with whispered commentary on other students’ fashion choices.
It wasn’t dramatic, but it was steady.
And then came summer break.
__________________________________________
When you returned to Nevermore in the fall, Eugene was… different.
Still Eugene — still bee-obsessed, still prone to tripping over nothing — but taller. Broader in the shoulders. His curls were a little longer, brushing the tops of his glasses, and his voice had settled into something warmer.
The first time you saw him was outside the hive shed. You almost didn’t recognize him.
“Hey,” he said, smiling like no time had passed at all.
Your brain, traitor that it was, noticed the way the sun caught in his hair. The way he’d filled out the sleeves of his sweater. The way your pulse skipped when his gaze lingered on you a fraction longer than usual.
“Hey,” you managed. “Did you… grow over the summer?”
He shrugged. “Maybe a little. Bees said it was about time.”
You laughed — maybe too quickly.
__________________________________________
From then on, things felt… different.
You’d be working together at the hives, and your arm would brush his — and you’d feel it. In class, you’d catch him leaning closer to explain something, his voice low, and it would send a shiver down your spine. You tried to ignore it, chalking it up to nostalgia or the novelty of his growth spurt.
But then came the Poe Cup preparations.
You’d agreed — reluctantly — to help him with the beekeeping club’s float. It was supposed to be a quick job: decorate, add props, done. Instead, you ended up spending hours together in the workshop, covered in glitter and honey.
At one point, you climbed a ladder to adjust the “Queen Bee” sign. You felt it wobble under you, but before you could steady yourself, Eugene’s hands were at your waist, steadying you.
“You okay?” he asked, voice softer than usual.
You looked down at him — those warm brown eyes, the faint flush on his cheeks — and your heart stuttered.
“Yeah,” you said, a little too quickly.
__________________________________________
That night, lying in bed, you admitted the truth to yourself: you’d fallen for him.
The realization was terrifying. This was Eugene Ottinger — the boy you’d once teased for talking to insects, the one person at Nevermore who’d never treated you with suspicion or guarded politeness. You didn’t want to ruin that.
But the way he was looking at you lately… maybe he felt it too.
__________________________________________
The moment that nearly broke your resolve came after the Poe Cup race. Your team hadn’t won, but the beekeeping float had survived the whole course without tipping — a first. Eugene was buzzing (figuratively and literally), grinning ear to ear as he handed you a cup of cider.
“You were awesome out there,” he said. “Couldn’t have done it without you.”
You laughed. “You’d have been fine. You’ve got your army of winged minions.”
He tilted his head, studying you. “Yeah, but… I like having you around anyway.”
Something about the way he said it — like it was the most natural thing in the world — made your heart feel too big for your chest.
You didn’t say anything right then. You just sipped your cider, trying not to let him see how much you were smiling.
__________________________________________
It was a slow burn, still smoldering. But in the quiet moments — brushing past him in the hallway, laughing together over something no one else would understand, watching him work in the golden hum of the hives — you knew gravity had finally caught you.
And you weren’t in any hurry to get back up.

[nothing lasts forever]
Eugene Ottinger × Reader
Synopsis: in which you knock some sense into your boyfriends head after noticing his lack of hospitality towards Pugsley
You first noticed Eugene's rudeness at the beginning of the year, you had been on your way to visit as you hadn't seen him all summer.
You were almost at the door when you heard what Eugene was saying to Pugsley, something about staying away from him now that he wasn't just the weird guy obsessed with bees.
That hurt, you'd fallen in love with that guy, he really thought that about himself. You had wanted to say something but held it, maybe he'd come back to his senses after he received his fame at the bonfire.
Wrong.
You'd caught him doing the same thing after the bonfire more than once, it made you kinda pissed seeing as your boyfriend wasn't being nice, and to Pugsley at that if Wednesday found out it wouldn't end well.
So you confronted him, this needed to stop and you'd make sure that it did. After your last class of the day you caught up to him on his way to his dorm.
“Eugene!”, at the sound of his name and your voice he turned around with a smile. “Hi flower”, he said happiness evident on his face, he had not yet felt your annoyance.
“Eugene Ottinger, something has come to my attention”, at the mention of his full name he straightened up a little, you've only said it a handful of times, each being when you were angry at him.
“Did I do something?”, you scoffed did he do something. “Why have you been so hostile towards Pugsley, he's done nothing to offend you”.
“Don't, don't talk I'm not done, if this has anything to do with you saving the school then it needs to stop right now, things changed soon you'll be 'bee boy' to them again”, you paused to breathe a sigh of frustration.
“He's been nice to you since he met you, he looks so sad whenever you turn him down, he just got here there's nothing he could've done to piss you off. I don't like how you're acting, you can't be like this, it's just not who you are”
His head hung low seemingly comprehending your words “He tried to eat my bugs”, you sighed in disbelief, “Eugene he eats bugs, and I know that usually wouldn't aggravate you”.
“He's weird I finally have a bit of fame and I have to babysit Wednesdays brother, I mean he's always there can't he just make his own friends”.
“That's tough coming from you, I mean you understand what it's like to him aren't you supposed to be nice”, you say as you guided his head towards you, running your fingers through his hair.
“You ought to be nice with him Eug, Wednesday trusted you with her brother, and it's not nice to break people's trust”, you say as you press a kiss to both of his cheeks.
He melts under your touch, wrapping his hands around your waist and putting his head in the nook of your neck, “I'll apologize to him when I get back to the dorms” he said, his voice slightly muffled by your neck.
“When you said you were just some weird person obsessed with bees before and you didn't want people to see you like that anymore it hurt a little”.
“Sorry flower”, “I fell for that guy you know it's kinda rude to insult him”. Eugene laughs into your neck in turn making you giggle from the feeling.
“Love could you let go, we should probably head to our dorms to shower and change out of our uniforms”, he just hums not moving an inch. “Eugene, darling please I'm kinda sweaty it's uncomfortable”.
He huffed before letting go, right before you turned he kissed your forehead. “Meet me at the courtyard when you're done, I made somethings for you”.
You nodded before heading to your dorm.
So I wrote for him, this is not proof read, and it's short seeing as I'm currently writing something else, no one wanted too so I did, I will most definitely be doing more that are not really focused on the plot, I just wanted this to be the first cause him being mean to my new pookie angered me.
