I finally finished this lol :3

Alright! This is actually one of my oldest AUs. I call it the “enrichment AU” for reasons I will go into shortly.

Basically, the Dread Powers are both sentient and, more or less, benevolent. They’re still beings of fear, manifesting and feeding on it like in canon, but unlike in canon they have intent and consciousness that is distinct from this existence. And by and large, they’re genuinely fond of humanity. Because of this, none of them actually want a successful ritual, because 1) they like the world as it is, and 2) they themselves wouldn’t survive the process, and the resulting “ruined world” wouldn’t be their kingdom, it would be a world laid to waste by their rotting metaphysical corpses.

Unfortunately, some of the humans of the world haven’t quite gotten the message.

See, the problem is that direct communication between Powers and humans is impossible, and the best way I can describe it is with a zoo metaphor. If you’re a zookeeper, you can form a relationship with animals in your care. You can get to know their personalities, learn how to motivate them, even train certain behaviors into them. But you can’t explain your thought process to an elephant anymore than an elephant can explain its thought process to you.

And it’s sort of like that in this AU, though sometimes it’s hard to tell who’s providing enrichment to who. Hence, the enrichment AU.
