Hi! My name is Ćrissiel, she/her. 22. I follow from @dyke-terra.
In case it isn't blindingly obvious from my writing, which I'm not going to lie, I was sure it was, I'm the dirty liberal Zionist they all warned you of. My main story is an incredibly thinly veiled allegory for the historical material conditions that led to the rise of Jewish nationalism to begin with, except with a wish fulfillment ending where everyone gets along and there's no >80 year conflict.
I want peace. I want everyone who has a reason to call that land their home to be able to live there safely and peacefully, and I include my people in that. If you think that sentence makes me a monster, then maybe you should start by looking in the mirror.
That aside! The fun stuff.

Cape whump series. Living weapon whumpee, multiple whumpers.
Homecoming (The Long Way Around) - Master Post
Main project!
Original story starring elf protagonists. Very loosely inspired by the history of antisemitism. Requests and asks welcome/encouraged!
In the aftermath of the Revkian Emperor's death, the empire splits into three factions, one for each of the emperor's two sons and one following a notable general.
Main TWs: Slavery, fantasy racism (modeled after antisemitism specifically but directed towards elves), a whole lot of misogynistic language, so much sexual abuse.
Protagonists include:
Morwƫ - Broken/conditioned whumpee. Somewhere between 100 and 200. An elf from a clan that's been enslaved by the Revkian Empire since before he was born. Conscripted into the military and branded using dark magic that makes him incapable of actively going against said empire at 60, he's had a rough go of it. Of course, now the empire is split into three parts, who is he obligated to be loyal to? Aside from his beloved captain, who's been captured by what he sees as usurpers. Possibly a reincarnation of Itarata's dead sister. Playlist.
Captain Mikhail: Caretaker/whumper turned whumpee. In his fifties but looks and acts much younger thanks to his bond with Morwƫ. A human captain in the Revkian Empire, responsible for managing Morwƫ. A manipulative bastard who flaunted his control over his fort's elven slave one too many times, and now his jealous fellow soldiers are eager to make him pay.
Itarata: Defiant whumpee. Around 900 years old. A leader of the Orontdrim, a tribal nation of free elves living in the mountains on the periphery of the border of the Revkian Empire. Captured by those very same "usurpers." Playlist.
Esteldur: Caretaker. Around 900 years old. A very confused Orontdrim who's doing his best to take care of an incredibly traumatized Morwƫ as he sets out to rescue his oldest friend. Playlist.
There's also now a "sidestory" centered around Prince Ilmatar of Minyas, the first city of elves, and his life after the city's fall. Said sidestory is now like half the length of the series, so I'm not sure how long I can keep calling it a side story.

homecoming (the long way around) - masterpost
the road to redemption (2/2)
Morwƫ wakes up, free. He realizes, he has no idea what to do next.
TW: Past slavery, conditioned whumpee with a Fucked understanding of sex and sexuality.
MorwĆ« wakes from the gentle rest, and the first thing he notices isā absence. It takes him a few minutes of staring at Esteldur and Itarataās worried faces for him to realize whatās missing. āØāØPain. The pain is gone.
Itās not lessened, not a temporary reprieve ā itās gone. He pulls himself up into a sitting position, holding his knees tight. Heās shaking, badly. He didnāt thinkā he didnāt think they could actually do it. Theyād sounded so confident, but it wasnāt supposed to be possible. Everyone said the brands were foreverā¦
āAre you alright?ā Esteldur asks him. MorwĆ« doesnāt know how to answer. Is he? What does being alright look like?
He can think whatever he wants now. He tries to cut himself off from thinking that freedom of thought is something heād even want, but the pain heās expecting doesnāt come. Itāsā he canā but ā
What does he want to think, now that he can? He tries to think of a topic, something subversive, something he couldnāt even begin to conceive of before, but⦠thereās nothing. Heās not loyal to the Emperor? He can try out the thought, roll it around on his tongue, but doesnāt even feel true. What alternative is there?
āIā donāt know,ā MorwĆ« admits. He looks down, still instinctively expecting a blow no matter. āYou really did it.ā
A beat. He glances towards Itarata, eyes wide.
āWeāre both free,ā Itarata reassures him. āAs long as we stay away from mages. Weāre free.ā
āUm. Thank you, sirs,ā he says, but the words feel too small. āIā what now?ā
He flinches. The question feels like ingratitude. But surely theyāll expect some sort of payment for this. Esteldur kept going on about how neither of them would ask anything like that, but MorwĆ« doesnāt have anything else.
āWhat do you want to do?ā Esteldur asks, and Itarata shoots his friend a look MorwĆ« canāt decipher.
MorwĆ« feels panic rise up in his chest. Heās able to think about that question now, thereās no magical pain forcing him to consider someone elseās priories, but itās not like the pain was a barrier around some secret vault full of ideas and plans. He hasnāt been capable of conceptualizing a life outside of this for decades, and now his mind is freeā thereās nothing. Heās trying, and thereās nothing.
āWhy are you asking me?ā he asks instead, trying to hide his panicked breathing. His heart is racing as his body tries to brace for pain thatās not coming. He should probably be trying to figure out where he is, how they managed to free him, but all he can focus on is the feeling of absence. āAre you going to leave me?ā
āNo!ā Esteldur says, louder than he maybe intended judging by how he takes a step back. His next words are more measured. āNot unless you ask us to.ā
āThen. I can go with you guys?ā
Itarata takes a seat next to Morwƫ, close enough that Morwƫ can cross the distance and hold him if Morwƫ wants to but far enough away not to put any pressure on him. Esteldur stays standing, awkward.
āYou might not want to, once you find out what weāre planning,ā Itarata tells him. MorwĆ«ās eyes widen. āWeāre going to free the others.ā
āWhā what others?ā
MorwĆ« thinks of the other elves he met in training. Of his home. But there are so many Móladar, scattered across the world. Surely he canāt meanā
āAll of them,ā Itarata says, confirming where MorwĆ«ās mind went.
āBut thatās impossible, sirs.ā
It was supposed to be impossible for a Mólado to be freed at all⦠he thinks, and it doesnāt hurt.
āItās difficult,ā Itarata corrects him. āDangerous. Itāll take resources. An army or two. And those things arenāt easy to acquire. But if thereās anything we have, itās time.ā
āItāll mean more war,ā Esteldur explains. āFacing the people that had you bound to their will for half a century, if not your entire life. In all likelihood, fighting other Móladar. And youāre vulnerableā the brand can be reactivated if youāre as much as touched by an enemy mage. Frankly, Iāve spent the past half hour attempting to convince Itarata to take a backseat for this, because the risk of him being bound again is so high. Iām certain the fate that would await a runaway slave would be unimaginably cruel.ā
āAnd thereās⦠another option?ā MorwĆ« asks, his eyebrows furrowed.
āYou could stay here, with the Toldrim,ā Esteldur offers. MorwĆ« looks around at least, realizing they mustāve made it to the islands. He smells the airā tastes sea salt. āOr stay at VarnandĆ«, while the two of us marshal an army.ā
āWe could also try to find your parents,ā Itarata adds. MorwĆ« shakes his head at that one, fast.
He doesnāt know what he wants, other than not that. The thought of them seeing him now, after whatās happened to him⦠he doesnāt want them to know. What he let happen. What he did, in order to survive. And thereās a part of him that resents them a bit too.
āNot that, then,ā Itarata says, and Esteldur gives him a look again. Itarata shakes his head, microscopically, and MorwĆ« wonders if theyāre under the impression theyāre being subtle. He might not be able to decipher the specifics, but he can tell theyāre communicating. āIf thereās anything else you can think of that you might want, weāll do our best to help you get it.ā
āWhat⦠what about Mikhail, sirs?ā
Thereās a knot in MorwĆ«ās chest as he mentions hisā captain? Lover? Owner? He thought itād be simpler if he ever managed to be rid of the brand, but that particular source of pain only seems more pronounced now heās capable of looking at it from a wider array of angles.
āWhat about him?ā Itarata asks.
āI know you two hate him.ā MorwĆ« pulls tighter in on himself. āDo you want me to hate him too, now that I can?ā
āWeāā Itarata starts, then he stops. āDo you hate him?ā
MorwĆ« shrugs, and he wants to burry his head in between his legs. He knows this isnāt acceptable posture to adopt while dealing with a superior, but he doesnāt care. The question leaves him feeling hollow. He doesnāt know. It hurts to think of loving him. But it hurts to think of hating him too. āI can try to, sir.ā
āYou want to please us,ā Itarata says, and MorwĆ« nods, feeling a knot in his chest. He shouldnāt. Theyāre the enemy, maybe. Or at least, theyāre not on his side. Butā what is his side? He doesnāt have to be loyal to the Revkians anymoreā¦
Why wonāt they just give him something to do? If theyāre going to war, he can fight for them. If either of them want him in their bed, he can do that too. If they want someone to take out their frustration on, heās perfect for that. Whipping boy. Itās what everyone says about him. But instead of telling him, theyāre asking.
āDo you feel like you owe us? For helping you?ā Itarata asks.
He doesnāt know the answer to that either. Maybe? He didnāt ask for this. He didnāt ask to be freed. He couldnāt. He couldnāt even conceive of wanting to. He doesnāt feel happy, now he is free. He just feels empty. MorwĆ« shrugs again, after a pause. Itās as good an explanation as any, but it feels wrong.
I want youā he thinks, but he doesnāt know how to finish that sentence even in his own mind. Want them to do what? Thereās a hollow sort of need in his chest, where Mikhail once wouldāve fit, but he doesnāt feel safe there anymore. Maybe itās a chain breaking.
āDo I, sir?ā MorwĆ« asks.
āNo,ā Itarata answers, definitively, and for whatever reason, MorwĆ«ās heart breaks at that. If this feeling is a debt, itās something he can repay and then itāll be gone. But if itās not, then thereās just⦠a vacuum, impossible to ever fill. āYou can come with us, if you really want to. We canāt stop you. But you donāt have to, either.ā
āI just want to be useful, sir,ā MorwĆ« says, his voice small. He doesnāt want to fight, not really. But he doesnāt want to be alone, either. He looks at Itarata and imagines himself curled up at the generalās feet. In his bed. It only makes MorwĆ« feel a little sick. Unlike Esteldur, Itarata isnāt married. And heās shown interest, in taking MorwĆ« from Mikhail, hasnāt he? āThatās all there is.ā
āThereās a lot of ways to be useful,ā Itarata tells him, but MorwĆ« doesnāt want to be useful in any other way. He knows what heās good at. Itarata flinches at touch from almost everyone these days, ever so slightly, but not from MorwĆ«. He just tenses instead. āIf you want to contribute to the war effort, you could learn to smith. Make weapons. Or cook, even. Thereās always room for more cooks.ā
MorwĆ« nods, but he knows what else thereās always room for in armies.
āYou donāt need to decide now, anyway,ā Esteldur points out. āIt sounds like you donāt want to stay with the Toldrim.ā
MorwĆ« nods, and then he says āPlease donāt leave me here, sirs,ā for good measure.
āWe wonāt leave you,ā Esteldur promises, again. MorwĆ« thinks he means it, but they also clearly donāt want him with them on this campaign. Thatās what theyāre angling at, right?
He doesnāt understand why they wonāt just order him about it. Maybe the brand wonāt force him to obey anymore, but heās still a good soldier. Good boy. Good dog. Heāll still follow orders. If they could use that sort of magic too, he wouldnāt fight if they wanted to brand him too. He might even beg them.
Theyāre so good to him. So soft and kind. Heād do anything for them to be proud of him. Anything but leave.
āWeāll all be staying here for the night, anyway,ā Esteldur says, nodding in acknowledgement. āItās too late to get going again, and we need to restock supplies. The leader of the Toldrim has graciously allowed us the spend the night with her, so we should head back across town before the sun sets.ā
MorwĆ« gets to his feet. He has to shoot a hand out and grab Esteldur to keep from falling overā heās a bit dizzy.
āTake it easy,ā Esteldur tells him. MorwĆ« nods, looking up at him with wide eyes. āIf you need to lean on meā¦ā
There was a part of him so thoroughly repressed he could barely acknowledge it that longed for this. MorwĆ« canāt say he expected that part to take over entirely, that he could just enjoy being free without complications, because that would mean heād been capable of acknowledging it. Butā heās still somehow disappointed. Whatās changed?
š - What does your character keep on them at all times? If I were to search them, what would I find? How would they feel if they didn't have these things?
š» - What scares your character? How do they handle being confronted with their fears?
Itarata - his sword. He lost the one he's carried with him for centuries to the humans, and he's so mad about it. I think he probably carried his sword with him from Minyas. He also lost his bow, quiver, and armor, which he's also pretty upset about, but he doesn't carry those with him always. Angiel retrieved them for him, though he was using replacements for a bit there. He's very happy to have them back, but
Esteldur - His sword also. Wedding ring, engagement necklace, among a rotating assortment of other jewelery. He ends up having a lot of random stuff in his pockets. He likes clothes with a lot of pockets, and he's consistently surprised by what ends up in them. Some of his clothes have random things in them from literal decades ago. A lot of half finished carving projects. I think he's less attached to his possessions than Itarata, and he's more likely to replace them, since it's the sentiment that matters, but he'd still grieve. I think he actually probably already lost the original engagement necklace in a pogrom-- he didn't replace it until Orontdrim were settled in Varnandƫ, with a stone local.
Anarissƫ - Ring, engagement necklace. She still has her original necklace, but she switched to one with a stone from the Great Mountains when Esteldur got a new one. They renewed their vows when they did. She carries a knife with her even though she lives in Varnandƫ and doesn't generally fight, mostly out of memory of humans in T'agavor denying the Lelyar the right to carry weapons, which of course led to them being slaughtered when the inevitable pogroms came. She would be very upset about losing her ring and necklace.
Amuntiel - Almost always some sort of sewing project on her. She definitely always has thread and needles, as well as at least a few pairs of scissors, all of which were probably made by a friend I haven't named yet. She gave one of those pairs to Morwƫ. I think it probably had mother of pearl inlay.
Morwƫ - At the onset of the civil war, nothing other than his uniform and his weapons, which were standard Revkian issue, nothing nice. His parents gave him a (nonprecious) stone from Minyas that they'd managed to keep over the centuries, as a good luck charm, but he had it stolen from him, which absolutely devastated him. From that point, he committed to having nothing personally precious, so it couldn't be used against him. He tried really hard to decline Amuntiel giving the pair of scissors, but she made the practical argument that he did need a pair of scissors if he was going to learn to sew. He would probably genuinely try to kill anyone who tried to take them from him. (He didn't have them on him when Mikhail kidnapped him because I'm not that mean.)
Fears
Esteldur - He's afraid of loss more than anything. He's already lost so much in his life, and he's terrified of losing anyone else. This is why he tries to not let people in, so he can't lose them.
Anarissƫ - Losing people also. More focused on places and situations than people like Esteldur. (Or maybe that's the other way?)
Itarata - Loss of control. He's always hated not having control, and it's been so much worse lately since he has, fairly seriously, actually lost it.
Angiel - Also loss of control but with a slightly different flavor.
Mikhail - Loss of control, more similar to Itarata than Angiel.
Morwƫ - Making his own choices/being forced to acknowledge the fact that he's been making them this entire time.
Ilmatar - Change, unpredictability.

Itarata finally talks about his feelings, real, not clickbait?
-
TW: Vague discussion of past torture, including gang rape.
Itarata makes it through dinner. He focuses on his food in front of him, just taking it one bite at a time. Esteldur sits by his side, making sure nobody bothers him.
Itarata canāt help but feel like his friend is acting like a bit of a guard dog, scowling at anyone who tries to keep near, but he appreciates it, so he canāt exactly complain. A few people do try to approach, and Esteldur points them towards Cindion.
He doesnāt go back to his quarters, afterwards. He follows Esteldur instead. Esteldur looks at Itarata, raising an eyebrow, but doesnāt say anything. Esteldur holds the door open for Itarata once they reach Esteldurās place. Itarata waits until itās closed before he lets out a breath he didnāt realize heād started to hold.
āSo,ā Esteldur says, taking a seat in a chair. Itarata stands there, leaning against the door.
āSo indeed.ā Itarata sighs, crossing his arms.
āAre you going to sit down?ā Esteldur asks. Itarata shrugs. He feels better standing here, practically guarding the door. āAlright, then.ā
āYou saw,ā Itarata says after a few tense moments. āWhat happened.ā
āI saw the shape you were in,ā Esteldur agrees and corrects him at once. āAnd Iād started to get the impression we werenāt going to talk about it.ā
āHow much is there to say?ā Itarata asks, a hint of emotion breaking through his otherwise forced calm. āWhatever youāve guessed about what happened is probably right.ā
Itarata breathes, his heart pounding faster than it should. He forces it to slow.
āI thought getting back here would help. That Iād be fine, again.ā
āYouāre not,ā Esteldur states. Itās not a question, or even really a response to Itarataās words as much as an observation.
āMaybe when the brand is gone?ā he offers, and Esteldur stares him down. āI keep feeling everyoneās eyes on me. Itās like they all can seeā and I donāt know why I care. Even if they did all know exactly what happened, that doesnāt mean anything other than that the humans are deranged.ā
āSo youāre not offended by the notion that anyone could ever see you vulnerable.ā
āNo,ā Itarata says too quickly, and Esteldur gives him a look. āFine. Iām not exactly thrilled about it. Iām concerned about the damage it might do to morale.ā
āMorale,ā Esteldur repeats, skeptical. He knows Itarata far too well. āThereās absolutely no ego involved in this.ā
āI took the sacrifice so more of us wouldnāt die,ā Itarata says. āI knew what I was getting into. I knew the way they talk about us, I knew there was a chance they wouldnāt exactly play by the same sorts of rules as we do. And Iām here. I survived.ā
āYou make it sound so logical,ā Esteldur says. āLike I didnāt find you half dead, covered in those menās āā
āDonāt,ā Itarata cuts him off. His hands are shaking. Heās better than this. Stronger than this.
āWhy not? Do you think not saying it will undo it? Make it any less real, like any of the other hundreds of things we donāt talk about?ā Esteldur leans forward, a little bit of frustration creeping into his voice like heās not just as bad as Itarata about it. āYou can admit that youāre not okay.ā
āIt was eleven days,ā Itarata says, his heart racing in his chest. Heās not sure how he managed to convince himself to walk all the way here. Angielās expression looms in his mind. As does Mikhailās, for whatever reason. āItās really not that long. I donātā I donāt want to not be okay, alright? Is that what you two want to hear?ā
āI mean, that part was slightly obvious, yes,ā Esteldur says, with his trademark wry amusement. āIt wonāt kill you to admit youāre not.ā
āIām not going to let the humans win.ā Itarataās surprised by the venom in his own voice. His shake is only getting worse.
āMorwĆ« and I killed a few dozen. Angiel will take care of the rest. Itarata, sit down.ā Those last words are an order. Itarata follows, sitting on the bed. There are few people in this world that he listens to like that. Few that ever existed and much fewer now. āYouāre not engaging with the humans that actually exist. Youāre engaging with the idea of them.ā
āMaybe,ā Itarata admits.
āDonāt mistake me, Iām not saying Iām opposed to whatever it is youāve got in mind. You know Iāll follow you anywhere, and Iām just as mad about all of this as you are.ā
āBut,ā Itarata starts.
āBut you know that winning the war you plan on starting wonāt change what happened. And on the subject of other things we donāt talk about ā it wonāt bring her back, and it wonāt bring back my parents either.ā
āItās not about that,ā Itarata protests, and Esteldur gives him a flat look.
āItās always about that. And back even further ā can you honestly tell me that you donāt still dream of Minyas?ā
Itarata canāt meet his eyes. āIt burned, and we werenāt even there.ā
āYou put everything on yourself. Always.ā Esteldur sighs, and Itarata rankles at that. His look is enough to scare most humans into stunned silence, but Esteldur doesnāt flinch. āYou canāt be everywhere at once, and you canāt always be strong. And⦠I suppose I need to get to my point here, which is to say, it scares me half to death, most of the time.ā
Itarata was about to say something in rebuttal at the implication that heās not invincible, but the genuine grief and worry in Esteldurās voice knocks the wind out of him.
āIām sorry,ā Itarata tells his old friend.
āThereās a part of me that rather selfishly wants to shake you and ask you if you understand how you looked, then. What I saw, what Iād been worrying about with everything MorwĆ« said about the way the humans were⦠I know you were the one that endured it, but Itarata, I thought you were dead. I thought Iād lost you.ā
Itarata looks away. He doesnāt want to think of the way he mustāve appeared. Slumped, collapsed. Broken. He doesnāt remember it well. He doesnāt want to. Some capacity for emotion slips away from him, and heās a step out of touch with the moment.
āI thought I was dead too,ā he admits, his voice completely empty of emotion. He feels hollow. Like the thing theyād treated him as. āI donātā really remember most of it. It blurs together.ā
āYou donāt need to, I just⦠I suppose I needed you to acknowledge it.ā Esteldur is the look to look away this time. āI didnāt mean to drag it up.ā
āYou didnāt, really,ā Itarata says, sighing. āItās not very far beneath the surface. I just⦠I donāt know. I donāt know how to get it out. Or how to bury it, with everything else.ā
āI donāt know either.ā Esteldurās voice is smaller. āI know there was no physical way I couldāve gotten there fast enough to stop all of it, but I canāt help feeling⦠I know I shouldāve done more.ā
āThe first day was the worst. Outside. That was ā I donāt think it was actually all of them. Realistically speaking, it couldnāt have been. But it wasā¦ā Itarataās not sure he can breathe. Not sure he can speak. He manages to do both anyway. āIt was near the end of the morning, at the start. And by the time they were done, at least for the day ā I could see the stars.ā
Esteldur catches a breath. Itarata tries to keep from folding in on himself. He manages, somehow.
āIāll be okay,ā Itarata says, though heās not sure if itās to Esteldur or himself. His words sound hollow to his own ears. āThatā it doesnāt change anything. Once Iām free of this cursed thing, once Angielās wiped the last of them off the mapā¦ā
āThatās when the real work will begin,ā Esteldur says, instead of letting the ambiguity hang in the air. Itarata relishes the pivot.
āYes,ā Itarata agrees. His voice feels a bit stronger now. āYou know me, I always do better when I have a purpose. And when I know the way everything is laid out.ā
They sit there, just two old friends dealing with the enormity of the violation they experienced. Now Itarata stops to think, he appreciates that heās been slightly unfair in keeping his distance like this. He mightāve endured the abuse, but in a way, there was a degree of solace in the certainty. Esteldur spent those eleven days wondering, fearing, dreading.
And what he foundā he canāt possibly begin to comprehend that sort of pain. Of fearing the worst and finding it.
āI think you should tell people what happened,ā Esteldur starts after a pause, and Itarata is about to object but he raises a hand. āNot like this. But rumors are going to continue to swirl about this. Especially if people are going to join you on the campaign, theyāll find other examples of what the human are like. And youāve got two options with that. You could try and fail to hide the fact that you were tortured, let people come to their own conclusions.ā
āOr?ā
āShare it in a way that fires everyone up. Youāre going to need to explain why this matters, why we canāt just keep hiding out here like we have been, and thereās two possible motivations. Itās either what happened to MorwĆ« or what happened to you.ā
āAnd you donāt think MorwĆ« is enough?ā
āI think we should learn everything we can from him, and then find somewhere safe for him, somewhere heās not going to have to deal with everyoneās questions and prying eyes. Getting the brand off is only the beginning. Heās going to need time to even come to understand whatās been done to him, let alone how to advocate for himself about it.ā
āSo Iāll have to deal with the questions instead,ā Itarata sighs. āDelightful.ā
āWerenāt you the one who insisted we need to focus on helping him?ā Esteldur asks, and Itarata glares at him, albeit without much actual anger behind it. āItās the only serious way to turn this whole debacle to our benefit, morale-wise.ā
āNo, youāre right,ā Itarata agrees. He meets Esteldurās eyes, gently this time. āIām not ashamed of what they did. Theyāre the ones that did wrong.ā
āYou just donāt like being vulnerable,ā Esteldur says.
āDoes anyone?ā
They sit there for another comfortable moment.
āIt doesnāt have to be right away. Weāll need to take at least a week to resupply. Or we could wait until we get backā¦ā Esteldur offers.
āBefore we leave,ā Itarata shakes his head. āThat way, people can start making up their minds as whether or not they want to come and make preparations.ā
āItās up to you. Iād say donāt let me pressure you into making any choices you donāt want, but we both know that I couldnāt if I tried.ā
Itarata laughs, standing up. Heās annoyed to admit to himself that he does feel a bit better. Lighter, maybe. Thereās still a heavy weight heās carrying, but heās able to acknowledge itās there, that itās not just part of who he is.
Thereās other, older weights, but those are far more comfortable in his chest.
TW: Some very dubcon cuddling, Mikhail being a piece of shit, discussions about consent had in a very questionable way. I continue to be unsure of how to warn for these things.
Esteldurās lost for what to make of the power dynamics between the traveling party, especially now Mikhailās awake more properly. This night doesnāt make anything less confusing.
Questions about the Orontdrim. Nothing big at first, at least not to Esteldurā MorwĆ« starts by spending too long looking at Esteldurās outfit, the details of the embroidery on it, before tentatively asking while the four of them ride, as if the words themselves are a dangerous weapon, what the floral designs were. If they meant something in particular.
But one thing leads to another, and soon enough, that night in camp, Esteldur is promising to introduce MorwĆ« to AnairissĆ«, who can teach him to make the special traveling bread. To Amuntiel, who can show him elven looms the likes of which he canāt have seen since his youth. Esteldur finds himself letting his own guard down as MorwĆ« slowly reveals a fascination with the feminine craftsā he almost off handedly references Nariel at one point, which leaves him with the strangest feeling of grief.
He hasnāt thought about her in years. She isnāt dead, as far as Esteldur knows, so he shouldnāt mourn her. Thereās every chance theyāll reunite some very distant day.
He asks about their holidays. About their practices. He even volunteers a few memories of Rethyarin traditions from his youth, carried on despite the yoke of slavery his people have labored under for hundreds of years, although itās clear going anywhere near those recollections triggers his brand. It seems like heās working himself up to asking something much bigger, something complicated, and Esteldur wants to encourage him to just ask, to put whateverās been so clearly eating at him into words, but Itarata reminds him over and over again to let MorwĆ« go at his own pace.
Morwƫ never does ask that final, most important, question, though.
Thereās a moment one morning, after heād taken a swim in a lake while keeping watch, where he seems closer than ever to just saying it, whatever it is, but then itās gone. And following that point⦠itās almost like MorwĆ« starts to disappear, despite being right in front of them.
Itarata and Esteldur expect things to get much worse when they run out of reasons to keep Mikhail in a trance state, as the party closes in on , but it changes surprisingly little. If anything, Mikhail being awake seems to make MorwĆ« more perky, not less. The nervous energy, which was starting to be masked by the fog of depression, starts to return. The questions donāt, though.
Theyād almost started to get grating, especially when MorwĆ« kept asking things that Esteldur didnāt know the answer to, but now theyāre gone, Esteldur misses them. He misses telling MorwĆ« he doesnāt know but having the consolation of being able to say he knows someone that doesā heāll introduce them. And he misses the brief glimpse of light on MorwĆ«ās face, even if it was so quickly followed by a shadow.
MorwĆ« doesnāt ask things of Mikhail at all. He answers. He rushes to fulfill every order Mikhail gives him, and Mikhail does give him orders. āØāØSometimes itās unthinking. Itās Mikhail telling MorwĆ« to take care of the horses, to bring him whatever item from MorwĆ«ās own pack even when the bag is closer to Mikhail than MorwĆ«. MorwĆ« barely even seems to notice itā itās the sort of small tasks heās been trying to do for Esteldur and Itarata this entire time. That, at least, contextualizes a minor frustration Esteldur had earlier, before the rescueā the way MorwĆ« would deny him even the opportunity to take care of the animals if Esteldur wasnāt quick enough in doing it himself, no matter how many times he told MorwĆ« that he enjoyed doing it.
Instinctive. Maybe indicative of a power dynamic between the two, but MorwĆ« seems comfortable with it in a way he hasnāt been with Esteldur this entire time. In a way heās only started to border on with Itarata. Esteldur wants it to stop, wants to grab MorwĆ« and make him at least consider what heās doing, but he knows itās not helpful, and this doesnāt seem⦠harmful.
But itās not always just a matter of course.
āMorwĆ«,ā Mikhail says, as the group finishes their meal one night, not too many more days away from VarnandĆ«. Mikhail says the name coldly, almost sharply, and MorwĆ« snaps his head around. Esteldur notes that MorwĆ« had been staring almost longingly at Itarata again. Thatās something that hasnāt changed now Mikhailās woken upā if anything, itās more pronounced. Mikhail mustāve noticed, because heās looking at Itarata too now.
Itarata matches Mikhailās gaze, as if the name uttered had been his instead. Steady. Just as dark.
āYes, sir?ā MorwĆ« asks, looking at Mikhail with those dark eyes of his so wide. So full of something Esteldur canāt even begin to comprehend. Terror? Awe?
āSit on my lap,ā Mikhail tells MorwĆ«, with his own eyes still very much set on Itarataās. Thereās something hungry in the set of his jaw, something predatory.
MorwĆ« is sitting closer to Itarata, maybe for the first time, but he obeys without a second thought. Slower than he is to grab Mikhailās things, though. Slower than he is to attend to the horses. Thereās a hesitancy to his step, and he glances at Esteldur as if looking for reassurance. Esteldur is about to open his mouth and say āyou donāt have to,ā but Mikhail preempts him.
āNow,ā Mikhail instructs him, and Esteldur looks to Itarata, trying to figure out a way to communicate without words. His heart is pounding. Would telling Mikhail to stop this only drive a wedge between the two duos? Pushing back on this relationship has only gotten Esteldur into trouble before, but what was that look if not a cry for help? Whatās the point of being here if not to help when MorwĆ« finally asks for it?
Itarata doesnāt even seem to parse that Esteldur is trying to get his attention. Heās too focused on Mikhail, as MorwĆ« uncomfortably settles on the manās lap. He faces out at the fire at first, but Mikhail taps him on the back. MorwĆ« turns his head up at Mikhail, a gesture thatās only possible because of how dramatically slouched MorwĆ«ās back is.
Mikhail tilts his head, and something passes between the two. Thereās a moment of almost resistance from MorwĆ« that has Esteldur screaming on the inside, but it melts quickly, from some signal Esteldur canāt make out, and MorwĆ« turns around, practically straddling the man. Mikhail wraps his arms around MorwĆ«ās back, tight enough that Esteldur feels his own breath struggling to escape his lungs.
Mikhail rests his chin on MorwĆ«ās shoulder, and throughout this, heās not broken eye contact with Itarata.
Itās like Esteldurās been hit. He doesnāt know what heās seeing here, canāt understand the language that MorwĆ«, Mikhail, and Itarata all speak that he doesnāt. A language that goes so much further than just Revkian.
Then, Mikhail moves one of his legs ever so slightly, and that must be some sort of signal, because MorwĆ« whimpers. Esteldur wants to jump up and scream, wants to grab MorwĆ« away from Mikhail, but heās frozen in place. And how would he even tear MorwĆ« away with the two of them so closely entangled?
Mikhail turns his head, careful not to lose sight of Itarata, and lets his tongue escape his mouth. He reaches it out, running the end of it up against Morwƫ ear, and Morwƫ squirms in response, not pulling away from the touch but writhing within the snakelike grip. His cheeks are badly flushed, and Esteldur thinks back to one of what feels like an endless number of times, asking Morwƫ why he wanted to rescue Mikhail so badly.
āI love him,ā MorwĆ« had told him. āHeās protected me for so long. I have to protect him now.ā
For a moment, seeing that flush, Esteldur wonders if heās reading the situation all wrong. If maybe this is something the two of them both want. He doesnāt look like heās happy there, exactly, but Esteldur knows that such things donāt always look happy in the moment. MorwĆ« isnāt fighting it, not really. Heās submitting so readily.
Then Esteldur recognizes those thoughts as blatant denial. MorwĆ« himself has never once spoken of what he gets out of this part of the relationshipā itās always been about MorwĆ« owing Mikhail. But owing him for what? What could possibly be worth this sort of humiliation? Esteldur had never gotten a clear answer out of it.
What do you think youāre doing? he screams at Itarata in their silent language, his eyes communicating every bit of horror at the scene, but Itarata isnāt listening to him. Like MorwĆ«, heās only hearing Mikhail.
After what feels like a minute of Mikhail slowly, agonizingly, and deliberately licking the edge of MorwĆ«ās ear, Mikhailās tongue recedes into his mouth and MorwĆ« stills in his arms, or at least stops writhing quite so violently. Heās still shaking, almost as badly as heād been when Esteldur had found him after the fighting had subsided. Mikhail only gives him a momentās rest before whispering something in that ear. Esteldur canāt see MorwĆ«ās face, canāt see if the fear and disgust is as evident in his expression as it is on the rest of his body, but thatās enough.
Itās enough.
Esteldur canāt force himself to watch any longer. He doesnāt care about the long term. He doesnāt even care about MorwĆ« or Itarata or anyone other than his own selfish disgust. He needs this to end, needs Itarata to do anything other than justā stare. He scrambles to his feet, the word āStopā!ā violently escaping his throat, half strangled.
āStop what?ā Mikhail asks, lazily. MorwĆ« clings to him tighter than ever. His body language has suddenly shifted, a new sort of fear coming over him. Esteldur wonders distantly, with horror, if itās because of him. If heās only making things worse. āYou like this, donāt you, soldier?ā
āAre you jealous?ā Mikhail asks, with a degree of arrogance that would astound Esteldur if it wasnāt currently knocking the life out of him, still forcing his legs up and down beneath a clearly terrified MorwĆ«. āWould you rather it be you, between my legs?ā
Esteldur flushes, from rage at the offense rather than humiliation but he knows Mikhail is counting it as a win regardless. Itarata doesnāt say anything at all, just studying the situation, which is so much worse than if heād scolded Esteldur for once again letting his temper get the best of him.
āJustā let go of him,ā Esteldur orders, trying to make himself sound as confident as possible.
Mikhail unwraps his arms, spreading them wide, but MorwĆ«ās still holding tight to him. Some other, invisible tie, keeping the two of them together. Esteldur is sure now that heās making things worse but he canāt bear this. Canāt bear to watch. Selfish. So selfish.
āDo you want to get off of me, MorwĆ«?ā Mikhail asks, his hands coming back in order to card through MorwĆ«ās hair. Esteldur burns at seeing it, seeing the completely unabashed display of ownership. The only living person in this world thatās allowed to touch his hair like that is his wife. Itās almost parental, in a sick way. āTell them.ā
āLike I told you,ā Mikhail says with a smile. āHe likes it. He likes to be useful.ā
MorwĆ« nods, miserable. Esteldur canāt help but think of all the little ways MorwĆ« tries so hard to be helpful around the camp, pre empting every little want Esteldur could have and still seeming desperate for more to do. The attempted kiss. Esteldur had needed to go and kick rocks far enough away from camp MorwĆ« couldnāt hear when that happened. This feels like the same thing, except Mikhail isnāt hesitating to take advantage of that horrible mindset.
Maybe Mikhail is why heās like this to begin with.
āOrā¦ā Mikhail starts, some worse idea clearly coming to mind. āIf this is really so bad. How about he goes and keeps Itarata warm?ā
MorwĆ« turns those pleading eyes on Itarata, who inhales sharply but forces a calm expression. Itarata has always been better about touch than Esteldur, more open to it, but thatās changed since being rescued. He seems to mind most of Esteldurās gently, reassuring pats. And Esteldurās sure that Mikhailās noticedā this isnāt the first time Esteldurās caught him looking at Itarata with that peculiar hunger.
Esteldur thinks he might be grateful the only emotion he can read off of Mikhail when the man looks his way is plain, borderline violent disgust.
Esteldur wants to say no again, to say, just stop it, but MorwĆ« opens his mouth into a wordless please and Esteldur canāt say anything at all.
āI would appreciate the company if you were willing to give it,ā Itarata lies, finally looking away from Mikhail to look at MorwĆ« instead. His expression lightens somewhat, less of a threatening edge to it, but itās still harsh. MorwĆ« looks at Itarata with those wide, vulnerable eyes, still pleading.
Mikhail slaps MorwĆ«ās ass, and Esteldur flinches at the sound.
Nowhere near as intimate as with Mikhailā MorwĆ« doesnāt have the best sense of boundaries, as the incident where heād tried to kiss Esteldur showed, but this isā far less invasive than what Esteldur imagines Mikhail had in mind. āØāØItarata wraps one arm around MorwĆ«, doing a very good job of acting like the skin contact from someone thatās basically a stranger doesnāt bother him. Esteldur is lost, out of the loop entirely, but MorwĆ« looks at him from where he sits curled under the cloak, and Esteldur tries to adopt a comforting expression.
All Esteldur can do is try to follow Itarataās lead. He canāt help feeling like heād misstepped earlier, reacting so obviously ā like heād fallen into some trap of Mikhailās. He looks between everyone, trying to evaluate the situation. MorwĆ« looks at him, and Esteldur finds some degree of comfort in MorwĆ«ās confused expressionā the two of them can be lost together.
āIf you wanted the physical comfort,ā Itarata tells MorwĆ«, though heās really talking to Mikhail. āYou couldāve asked sooner. I would have offered, if I wasnāt concerned about intruding on your personal space.ā
Esteldur isnāt sure how much of that is a lie. Heās fairly certain a good portion of it is, possibly would have been even before ā neither of them have ever been the most cuddly sorts, even back in their youths, though that mightāve been because of the nature of those youths. But Itarata has his priorities, and as much as Esteldur wants to yell at his old friend to prioritize his own wellbeing, he canāt say he doesnāt appreciate seeing the way MorwĆ« seems to relax.
Esteldurās cloak, the one heās absolutely certain heās never getting back from Itarata at this point, looks like wings over MorwĆ«. Or maybe a shield. Either way, itās a protective gesture. One Mikhail is very much not allowed into.
āHah,ā Mikhail says, faintly. The mocking cruelty in his voice is gone, as is⦠all of his tone, really. Esteldur half expected the man to take a swing at Itarata at first, but instead, the person theyāve been dealing with so far just seems to vanish, leaving a seemingly hollow shell behind. He doesnāt lookā all that different from MorwĆ«, really. āYou make it sound so easy.ā
āMaybe you over complicate things, where youāre from,ā Itarata says, shrugging. Unlike Esteldur, he doesnāt seem particularly disturbed by the sudden shift in Mikhailās tone. Maybe he understands Mikhail better than Esteldur does. Esteldur remembers Itarata mentioning seemingly out of nowhere that heād heard the manās screams back in the fort. āPersonally, Iāve always found yesās more meaningful when no is an equally valid option.ā
That feels like an accusation. āØāØItās more than a little ironic, as Esteldur spots all the little tells for Itarataās discomfort at the contact. Esteldur knows the two younger members of their party wonāt notice itā he doesnāt think he would, if he didnāt know Itarata so well. But Esteldur supposes the overall point is still valid, even under these dubious circumstances.
Esteldur steps, still so very uncomfortable. How did this get so charged so quickly?
āYouāre naive,ā Mikhail says, with some degree of bite to it, but he seems⦠hollow. Esteldur wants to think this is an act, some sort of persona that heās adopting to mess with them, butā itās hard to imagine that the proud monster theyād seen only moments ago would be willing to fake this degree of weakness. Besidesā itās such a stupid thing to say. Itarata? Out of all the words to describe him.
āMaybe,ā Itarata says, smooth. Thereās not a great deal of doubt in his tone.
āItāsā itās just the way things are, though,ā MorwĆ« tries to argue, even though heās the one huddling under Itarataās cloak as if for dear life, and Mikhail glowers at him, even though MorwĆ« is clearly trying to back him up. MorwĆ« freezes, pulling in tighter on himself. Esteldur wonders briefly if it hurts his body, to be in such tension all the time. It must ache. āIsnāt it?ā
āThe way things are now doesnāt have to be the way they are forever,ā Itarata tells the two of them. He glances towards Esteldur for the first time in some time now. Esteldur shrugs at his old friend. He trusts Itarata to handle this better than he can ā he still has absolutely no idea whatās going on here. āAnd some things donāt stop unless people make active choices to stop them.ā
āPeople donāt change,ā Mikhail tells Itarata, a little more confident now. Esteldur wonders if itās the way MorwĆ« flinched from him, that gave him that confidence back. Or if itās something elseā if itās not confidence at all something else, something hotter. Denial.
āThey do,ā Itarata shrugs with effortless certainty. Esteldur wonders who heās thinking about. He knows plenty of neri and nissi who have transformed over the centuries. Mostly slowly, in response to the steady but unstoppable acclimation of memories. But some much, much faster. āIf they choose to. If refusing to do so doesnāt cost them dearly.ā
Esteldur feels grateful, somehow, that the conversationās finally turned back to not so veiled threats. He knows what to do with those.
āBeing like this doesnāt cost you?ā Mikhail asks. The words should be venomous, and itās true that theyāre far from kind, but thereās barely anything behind them. āDoesnāt make people hate you? If you just acted normal, not any of this freakishness, they wouldnāt come after you. They wouldnāt hurt you.ā
That part is so obviously projection that Esteldur canāt help the humorless laugh that escapes him. Mikhail turns his attention on him, and Esteldur thinks if heād been tied up or worse, bound by a brand, heād find the raw, unfiltered hate terrifying.
āGive up everything we have, all for the hopes of getting the approval of people that made up their minds about us before weāve ever met? Are you mad? Did that even save you?ā
Itās Mikhailās turn to flush. Esteldur wonders for a moment if he should be afraid, if the manās going to go for a weapon, but he doesnāt. He just looks away from everyone now, somehow managing to be a spitting image of MorwĆ«, if MorwĆ« was angry instead of terrified. Esteldur wants to push him further, but Itarata signals him to stop. As if Esteldurās at all been the one pushing this so far.
Esteldur sits back down, and the conversation is over. MorwĆ« puts his head on Itarataās lap, maybe taking Itarataās words as more consent than they were probably meant as, but Itarata doesnāt stop him. The hypocrisy only seems more and more pronounced to Esteldurā how are you going to make that point for him while ignoring it so obviously for yourself? But Esteldurās not exactly going to call Itarata on it now. Not in front of those two.
Somethingās changed between the four of them, and Esteldur has no choice but to file this entire evening away in his head along side a long, long list of things heāll need to have words with Itarata about later.
The way that Itarata was looking at Mikhailā even if the point he was making was one that might ultimately benefit Morwë⦠it didnāt feel about helping MorwĆ« at all. It felt like some sort of competition. A challenge over ownership.
Itarataās obviously latched onto the notion of helping MorwĆ« as a way to avoid thinking about whatever happened to him, in those eleven days, and itās not like Esteldur can begrudge him that when heās been just as bad about it. But seeing thisā seeing Itarata now place a hand on MorwĆ«ās back, where their shared brand isā¦
Thereās discomfort in Itarataās body at the touch, yes, but thereās also an element of pride. Of triumph of what canāt help but read as Mikhailās defeat here.
Esteldur tries to banish the memory of Itarata on the ground, alive only in the literal sense. A human man on top of him. Having to wait for the opportunity to strike, out of fear of the humanās screams. Tries to pretend he didnāt see the bruises, the red, swollen parts of his body thatād been violated, over and over again. Mikhail hadnāt looked much better.
Esteldur trusts Itarata not to take this too far, trusts whatever passed between him and Mikhail tonight to be calculated and not cruel. And MorwĆ« doesnāt seem unhappy, where he is. Clinging onto Itarata as if for dear life. That trust, that knowledge, doesnāt make the knot in Esteldurās throat go away.
Every time he thinks he starts to grasp the dynamic here, it changes. Maybe thereās some element of resentment there. Maybe Esteldurās patience for unstable ground has been decayed over centuries spent in a relatively safe and predictable context. He doesn't know. He feels like he knows less about MorwĆ«, about all of this, than he did that first night.

--
Mikhail has been unexpectedly rescued from the predicament he's in by Morwƫ and an elf he doesn't recognize. He doesn't know how to deal with the new power dynamic, so mostly he seethes. Whumper/caretaker turned whumpee POV.
I think I'm going to end up dividing this into arcs so people can more effectively send me prompts, so this will be the start of the world's worst road trip arc.
Mikhail regains consciousness slowly.
The last thing he remembers is the colors and the motion. MorwĆ«ās black hair flying behind him, the red of Andreyās blood spraying across the room to match Mikhailās, and the silver of a blade heās never seen MorwĆ« even draw, let alone use. Then black.
He wakes to a face heād never thought heād see again, leaning over him in some sort of twisted reversal of their normal dynamic. MorwĆ«ās expression is twisted in a type of fear Mikhailās never seen beforeā and Mikhail thought heād practically catalogued every way his boy could feel afraid.
Mikhailās sure heās dreaming, or maybe hallucinating, but heās in too much pain to be dreaming. And the hallucinatory MorwĆ« isnāt worries about him. Heās onā the ground? The forest floor? Itās a welcome break from the stress positions his former comrades liked to leave him in, but itās firm. At least his head is propped up by some sort of bag.
MorwĆ« sees his eyes are open and twists back, turning to face someone Mikhail canāt see.
āHeās awake!ā MorwĆ« says in Quenya, breathy and afraid, and Mikhail tries to adjust his position to look at the other person. Heād told his boy to run, to get help, but he hadnāt actually expected MorwĆ« to be able to follow through on it. Heād half expected the elf to starve on his own, notā successfully rescue him? Let alone with the assistance of what can only be another elf.
Mikhail tries to pull himself up, tries to demand to know who this is, but MorwĆ« puts a hand on his chest, pushing him down gently. Far more gently than Mikhailās ever done to him.
āIām fine, Esteldur,ā says a voice that Mikhail does remember. Firm, despite its scratchiness. How can he speak at all, after all of those hours of screaming? Mikhail knows he couldnāt sound that confident right now. Although heād certainly been a prisoner for longer, he canāt confidently say heād had it worse than the elf. At least some of Mikhailās former comrades had shown hesitation to hurt him, even if that hadnāt lasted long. āAttend to the human. His injuries will cause his more damage in the long term.ā
And all but the most dedicated of them had gotten bored after Mikhail had broken down completely, preferring their new, prettier prey. Mikhailās face burns thinking about it.
āAre you sure?ā the new elfā Esteldurā asks, and Itarata makes a noise that could almost be a laugh.
āThank you,ā MorwĆ« says as Esteldur appears, the two of them crowding him. Mikhail flinches back, not only from the invasion of his already extremely violated personal space but because thatās a free elf. And an old one, tooā Mikhail canāt exactly explain how he knows, but thereās something to the way the bastard holds himself. Beyond the concern and annoyance on his face in even measure, thereās a profound fatigue in his eyes. āYouāre going to be okay now, sir.ā
Esteldurās hair is pale brown and straight, in contrast to MorwĆ«ās black. Itās pulled back in a tight, practical ponytail. His skin is warmer, much more tan, than MorwĆ«ās. His features are softer than MorwĆ«ās sharp edges, but heās the furthest thing from soft. Thereās no signs of wrinkles on his face, but thereās a weight to him that makes Mikhail think of his grandparents.
āRescuing you was a condition for his help,ā Esteldur says with a shrug, answering the question Mikhail hadnāt even gotten around to wondering yet. āAnd Itarata said that youād likely know a bit about these brands.ā
Mikhail wouldāve stumbled backwards at the venom in Esteldurās voice and on his face if he wasnāt flat on the ground, pain in all of his limbs. Dangerous. Dangerous. Mikhail canāt even reach his hands up to try to fight the free elf offā heās completely powerless.
āCan you wait until heās doing better before you start interrogating him?ā MorwĆ« asks, almost exasperated.
āFine,ā Esteldur says, glaring at Mikhail. āHow are you doing.ā
āIāveā been better,ā Mikhail gets out. His words are shaky, his voice is sore, and MorwĆ« looks at him with concern. Mikhail feels rage or maybe humiliation. Heās supposed to be the one looking down on MorwĆ«ā on his slave, his slut. He promises himself, heāll make MorwĆ« pay for seeing him like this. Heāll make the whore choke on it. āWh-who are you?ā
Esteldur glances towards MorwĆ«, as if waiting for the boyās approval. Worse, MorwĆ« nods, giving it.
āI am Esteldur, son of Astariel. That is Itarata, son of Lómwen. We are Orontdrim, a free people. Your loyal soldier,ā he says in a measured way that makes Mikhail assume heās chosen the description for MorwĆ«ās sake, āhas done us a service in guiding me to your peopleās stronghold.ā
āNotā not my people,ā Mikhail tries to say, but Esteldur looks at him like heās lying. He isnātā these people sided with a usurper and have practically become bandits. But all humans must look the same to elves. In seeing that face, Mikhail realizes it wonāt be enough to fuck MorwĆ« until his boy remembers Mikhail is the master and MorwĆ« his slave. Heāll need to destroy the two arrogant free elves. Heāll need to break them.
He is human. They are lesser than him. He is entitled to their service, and itās only through a freak of their births, however many centuries ago that was, that they are capable of looking in his eyes as if they are equals. Worseā as if Mikhail is beneath them.
Itarata is unbroken, despite enduring as much as Mikhail, if not more. But the other soldiers donāt have Mikhailās experiences in shattering elves. Mikhail swears to himself that one day, he will have the two of them begging for the right to lick his boots. Begging for his cock.
āIf you say so,ā Esteldur says, skeptically, and Mikhail swallows his terror. The mental image of the two elves as submissive and pliable as MorwĆ« escapes him as he realizes how utterly helpless he is. He turns to MorwĆ«. āYou were bandaging his wounds?ā
āYeah,ā MorwĆ« nods, bobbing his head. āI got the important ones. Oh, uh. Heās not at risk of bleeding out or anything, but I think a few of them might be⦠infected? Or starting to be? Theyāre weird colors.ā
He uses a Revkian word for infected. Apparently itās not a Quenya one.
āArenāt you the one that knows things about humans?ā Esteldur asks. āIām assuming whatever youāre talking about is a bad thing.ā
Mikhailās bite his lips. If heās been miraculously rescued from being tortured for fun by his former comrades only to die from infection from a hunch of idiot elves who donāt even know how to brews the most basic of anti infection potions⦠admittedly, he doesnāt exactly know either, but he at least knows where to find someone who can.
āI was their whore, not their doctor,ā MorwĆ« protests, and Mikhail feels his heart skip a beat. Was? How long has it been, that this Esteldur could get him talking like thatās the past tense? And it has to be the influence of Esteldur, Mikhail knows the boyās not exactly capable of changing on his own. āI know what it is, at least.ā
He canāt be. He canāt have gotten ideas in his head this quickly.
Esteldur gives Morwƫ a look before glancing over at where the other elf is propped up.
āItarata?ā Esteldur asks. āI donāt suppose you know anything about this?ā
āNot particularly,ā Itarata replies. āI know the word but not how to fix it.ā
āA human village willā have someone,ā Mikhail says. Every muscle in his body screams like itās been continuously stretched. He tries to look around, leaning up, but MorwĆ« gently pushes him down again. All he can tell is that theyāre in a forest and not the fort, but how far away from it are they?
āDo you know where any of those would be?ā Esteldur asks MorwĆ«, and MorwĆ« shrugs. Why would they ask him? Why are they listening to his opinion on anything? Mikhail thinks he understands the jealousy that drove the men that used to belong to him to side with a false emperor, to betray him. The emasculation of watching someone flaunt their control over his bitch.
āYou would want to ask the supply sergeant about that sort of thing, and Iām pretty sure you slit his throat.ā
āWhich one was⦠ah, yes. Apologies.ā
MorwĆ« shrugs. āHe wouldāve screamed.ā
āWell, if we keep going along the road, we should at least find an inn, and theyāll be able to point us in the right direction,ā Esteldur says. āBut will we be able to ride in this condition?ā
āI will endure it,ā Itarata states. āIāve made it thus far.ā
āYou should rest,ā Esteldur argues. āThe riding will aggravate yourāā
āI will be fine,ā Itarata cuts Esteldur off. āIāll heal on my own, given time and a safe haven. Mikhail will not.ā
āYouāll heal if you donāt bleed out.ā
āIāve endured only a fraction of what Iāve been made to understand was MorwĆ«ās daily experience for decades. And he is alive. They had no intentions of allowing me to die, but they did not care in the same way for Mikhail. Esteldur, I will ride under my own power, and I will ride soon.ā
Mikhail feels a moment of awe at hearing Itarataās words, the man pausing only for sips of water from a skin that Esteldur mustāve given him. He doesnāt raise his voice at all, but the words carry. No hesitation, even at the reference to his own abuse. Mikhail shoves that down. Heāll break Itarata like the traitors couldnāt. Heāll fix this. Fix the situation that left him so weak he needed elves to save him.
āItarataās right,ā MorwĆ« agrees, a little shyly but nowhere near as terrified as he mightāve been not so long ago. What did they do to him? āOnce they realize what happened, theyāll probably come after us. Especially considering, uh. The threats you made.ā
That last bit was directed at Itarata, who smiles like a wolf, despite the condition of his face. Mikhail gets a good look at him now. Heās mostly nude, with the exception of a cloak that looks better suited to Esteldurās frame. Mikhail himself is covered by MorwĆ«ās cloak and underpants. The cloak isnāt big enough to cover the fact that Itarata hasnāt been allowed that little dignity, nor the presence of bruises, crusted blood, and even bite marks across the inside of his thighs.
Itās hard for Mikhail to make out Itarataās facial featuresā itās practically nothing but bruise, shades of blue and purple dark enough to be mistaken for black. Mikhail wonders if he looks the same way.
Mikhail remembers overhearing some of those very threats from the cell next to Itarataās. There were times heād faltered, times even the defiant elf had let the humans draw begs from his lips, but mostly, heād stood strong. Mikhail had barely lasted a day before his own pride was nothing more than a distant memory.
When we get to wherever weāre going, he swears to himself. I will have my whoreās mouth on my cock, and there will be nothing those two arrogant bastards will be able to say or do to stop him from pleasing me.
The power dynamic, restored. MorwĆ« might be acting up, but he is still loyal. The brand on his back ensures he cannot act against the Empireās will, and the fact heās here means he still sees the empire as synonymous with Mikhail.
āI see your point. But if the human is to be conscious, this will cause more problemsā¦ā Esteldur trails off.
āIāll put him to sleep until heās needed,ā Itarata says, reaching out a hand. Esteldur crosses the small clearing to take it, helping the other old elf to his feet. He allows Itarata to lean on him some too.
āHe wonāt like thatā¦ā MorwĆ« replies, and Mikhail wants to agree, loudly, but his voice is already so sore.
āYouāve told me of some of what heās done to you āfor your own good.ā Is this not the same thing?ā Esteldur argues. MorwĆ« sighs, and Mikhail wants to scream that itās not at all. Heās a human, heās supposed to be the one holding the leash. āItarata is right. Besides, heāll heal faster in a trance-sleep.ā
āFor his own good,ā MorwĆ« says, as if heās trying to convince himself.
āN-noāā Mikhail tries to argue. He canāt be powerless in front of these three, any more so than he already is. He thinks back to all the times heās used that line on the boy, tried to remember if he ever actually meant it or if it was just an easy way to get him to comply with whatever it was Mikhail wanted. āNo, noā donāt. I can ride on my own.ā
Itās a lieā he knows he canāt. He knows heās nowhere near as strong, as brave, as able to bear the pain as Itarata so obviously is. But he canāt let them make decisions for him. Canāt let them think heās not the one in charge.
āIām sorry, captain,ā MorwĆ« says to Mikhail, pulling back and away to let Itarata closer. Mikhail already feels distant, like the darkness is coming for him again, and Itarata hasnāt even started whatever it is heās going to do. āAre you sure you can do this, sir? Your voiceā¦ā
āIāll be alright,ā Itarata says, and he begins to hum.
A softer, gentler unconsciousness takes Mikhail this time.
homecoming (the long way around) - masterpost
there'll come a day, you'll see, with no more tears
TW: Past sexual abuse, fantasy racism, flashbacks, misogynistic language. Whumpee coming onto caretaker out of conditioning.
Morwƫ attempts to pay Esteldur back in the only way he knows how. Esteldur attempts to explain the concept of consent while firmly pointing out that he is very married. Morwƫ doesn't really get it. You could call this caretaking.
It takes Morwƫ until the fourth night to break.
Well. Thatās not entirely true. Heād tried offering on the first night. But heād been kind of indirect, and Esteldur had too much on his mind at that point. MorwĆ« had been selfishly relieved, then, that the older elf didnāt seem to be in the mood. Heād been kind of freaking out, meeting other elves for the first time in decades.
Even if they arenāt from the same tribe, they are still part of the same people, or so he vaguely remembers someone saying from before he was conscripted. Dmitri had put it more crudely the night before the attack. āJust because theyāre not the same breed doesnāt mean they arenāt all dogs. Weāll make them our bitches.ā
Esteldur had cut Dmitri down the next day, though. The Orontdrim, as their name for themselves apparently is, might have taken some losses, but theyād done so much damage to the traitors despite being outnumbered and lacking active magic. Even if Esteldurās commander ā Itarataā hadnāt surrendered, they wouldāve won. It just wouldāve been at a greater cost. Not once, did any of the Orontdrim hesitate to defend their home. Even that surrender is only temporary, if Esteldur is to be believed, and he says it so confidently that MorwĆ« canāt help but believe him. Esteldur says everything with effortless confidence, except for things about MorwĆ«. MorwĆ« didnāt know it was possible for an elf to look so strong, to stand straight without that defeated look in their eye that MorwĆ« remembers from his childhood.
And MorwĆ« hasnāt even thanked Esteldur for saving him yet. Esteldur hasnāt asked yet, but MorwĆ« knows itās better to be proactive about these sorts of things. When people have to make demands, they tend to be more brutal. Itās just the way of the world.
MorwĆ«ās never been with another elf before, but he knows his own body isnāt that different from that of the humans whoāve fucked him. He just hopes that Esteldur isnāt too big. He knows heās bigger than most humans, though very few of them ever bothered touching him. He hopes whatever they saw in him that made him so unworthy of being touched in turn doesnāt hurt too much.
Esteldur finishes getting the fire going, then brushes his hands together, in a āwell, thatās done,ā gesture. He turns to MorwĆ«, whoās still standing up even though heās usually sitting at this point in the evening, half expectantly. MorwĆ« stares at him, trying to steel himself.
He feels a weight in his chest, a disgust building, and he wonders why. Arenāt elves supposed to be so desirable? Thatās what everyone says to him. āHow could we be expected not to fuck a pretty thing like you? Youāre all practically begging for it, arenāt you? Thatās what you do, thatās what you are.ā
MorwĆ« swallows the acid in his throat as Esteldur gives him a confused look. Normally, MorwĆ« is sitting down by now, curled up with his hands around his knees and trying to make himself look as small as possible, but he knows that isnāt exactly appealing to everyone. Esteldur doesnāt seem to like to be the type of person to force his legs open. He probably wants MorwĆ« to start it, to make a show of gratitude for saving him.
āDo you need something?ā Esteldur asks, looking up and down MorwĆ«. MorwĆ« interprets that as sizing him up. It has to be. He sounds almost annoyed. The first trace of doubt enters his mind, at the genuine confusion in Esteldurās voice. What if he doesnāt want this? MorwĆ« tries to ignore the thought. The fear, really. If Esteldur doesnāt want him⦠maybe heās ugly, for an elf. Or maybe heās been too thoroughly despoiled by humans to be desirable by his own kind.
āIā need toā¦ā MorwĆ« starts, and then he bites his lip, embarrassed by how awkward that sounds. Normally, a lone soldier would be all over him by this point. Maybe because Esteldur is so old, his perception of time is weird? That four days doesnāt seem so long to wait to take advantage of the fuckable young thing right in front of him? The willing whore? (Always willing. Always useful. They still take from him anyway.)
Esteldur tilts his head in what still seems to be confusion. āWhat?ā
āYou helped me. You saved me, and youāre helping me now.ā
āYes, I did,ā Esteldur agrees, his brows furrowed as if MorwĆ« still isnāt making sense. MorwĆ« tries to extend himself to his full height, though itās awkward. Heās not used to having to look up at someone. Heās usually the tallest person in any room.
Esteldur is strong and dangerous, and MorwĆ« needs Esteldur to want to protect him. Thatās all that matters. MorwĆ« steps forward and forces down the part of him that doesnāt want this like he always does. Because he does want this. He should want this more than usual. Esteldur has been gentle with MorwĆ« so far, not pushing him. He hasnāt even hit MorwĆ« once yet.
āIām. You said it was⦠um. I know you said you didnāt need anything, on the first night? But if you just wanted it. I canā I can be good? For you? I want to.ā
āWhatāre you talking about?ā Esteldur says, seemingly genuinely baffled, and MorwĆ« hesitates. Maybe he can back out again, like he did then. āWant to what?ā
āIāll justā I can show you,ā MorwĆ« says, stepping closer to the older elf and kisses him.
Or at least, he tries to. He blinks, realizing his lips are pressed against air. Thereās a hand on his chest, stopping him mid air, warm and solid and realizes with a start that Esteldur has stepped back, one hand out stopping him. MorwĆ« feels his heart skyrocket, and he stumbles backwards, moving away from the gentle but firm touch. He nearly trips over a tree root, ending up with his back against a tree, but Esteldur hasnāt followed him at all.
āAre you mad?ā Esteldur asks, as if MorwĆ«ās screamed suddenly, out of nowhere, or started talking to the air instead of tried to kiss him.
āIām sorry! Iām sorry.ā MorwĆ« pulls in on himself. āIf you donāt like that. If you donāt want me to start things. If you want to take it from me instead, or if you donāt think Iām good enough to kiss you, I donāt have to do the kissing, I know a lot of people donāt like that, I can justāā
āWhy would you think I would want any of that?ā Esteldur demands to know, disgust clear in his voice. His face tightens at that last sentence in particular. āYouāre barely older than a child, Iām nearing a millennia. Not to mention, I am married.ā
āThatās ok!ā MorwĆ« says, hurriedly responding to the second part of Esteldurās rejection. He doesnāt really know why him being barely more than a child would matter ā humans fucked him plenty before he became an adult. āI can keep a secret. Your wife doesnāt have to know. It doesnāt even really count, right?ā
āIā MorwĆ«, what are you talking about?ā
āEveryone sleeps with whores when theyāre at war, and weāre going to war, right?ā
He slips into Revkian for whore. He doesnāt know the Quenya word for it.
āI donāt understandā¦ā Esteldur says helplessly and the anger disappears from his voice. āIām not going to hurt you, I just...ā
āWhy not?ā MorwĆ« demands to know, almost pushing himself forward for a second.
āWhat?ā
āWhy donāt you want to hurt me? Youāve been so careful and nice and you havenāt put me in my place even once!ā MorwĆ« says, practically shouting it, and he realizes with a start there are tears in his eyes. āWhy havenāt you?ā
Esteldur opens his mouth as if to say something, then stops himself. He takes a deep breath instead, and MorwĆ« holds himself in preparation for a hit that doesnāt come. Esteldur pulls his hand where it hangs in the air back, then takes a step back. He continues to breathe intentionally, and MorwĆ« has absolutely no idea what heās thinking. He forces himself to take a step forward, arms by his side so Esteldur knows heās not trying to be a threat. Not trying to defend himself. āI mean, I can do it myself, if you donāt want to get your hands dirty? If I was out of line. I promise I wonāt fight or anything. Iām good at this, Iām good at taking it.ā
āMorwĆ«,ā Esteldur says, and in that moment, he sounds tired. The sort of way humans sound if theyāve gone without sleep for days in a row. Then he straightens. āDo you mind giving me a few minutes.ā
āNo, sir,ā MorwĆ« says, automatically. Heās not entirely sure what the hierarchy here is supposed to be, but clearly, Esteldur is above him. Everyone is always above him.
Esteldur inhales again, puts a hand to his face as he manages his breathing. He brings himself to say, āIāll be back,ā before he walks off back into the woods. MorwĆ« stands there, the fire casting shadows on his face, waiting. He hates waiting. Itās so much easier when people just get things over with.
MorwĆ« hears Esetldurās steps, until he canāt anymore. Esteldurās steps are heavier than they usually are. Heās nowhere near as loud as any of the humans MorwĆ«ās known, but heās still audible to MorwĆ«ās sensitive hearing most times. This time, he breaks branches underneath his feet. Too angry to be careful, MorwĆ« realizes. And heās gone away from their camp.
For a brief second, MorwĆ« is terrified that, despite Esteldurās words, the other elf has decided to abandon him. That he doesnāt need MorwĆ«ās help to find the fort after all. He tries to reassure himself by telling himself that all of Esteldurās stuff is here, including the horses, but then he starts to worry about why Esteldur left. To find a good branch to make a switch of? He counts the seconds, but his carefully measured numbers just start reminding him of having count out the blows of a whip.
Five minutes. Ten minutes. He doesnāt know where he should be when Esteldur comes back, if he should be prepared and if so, in what way? He just ends up standing there where Esteldur left him, as still as a statue, and when Esteldur does come back, sixteen minutes later, he seems surprised to see MorwĆ«ās still standing there. He buries the surprise quickly.
Esteldur takes a seat, cross legged, by the fire, and MorwĆ« stares at him. He doesnāt seem to have anything with himā¦
āYou can sit, if youād like,ā Esteldur tells him after a pause and another deep breath. MorwĆ« nearly dashes up to the fire and sits by it too, back to his previous position. It is starting to get cold. Esteldurās posture is open, unrestrained. He puts his hands in his lap. āIād like to apologize, for my⦠outburst a moment ago.ā
āItās alright,ā MorwĆ« says. āIām used to worse, sir.ā
āThatās the issue,ā Esteldur sighs, and itās MorwĆ«ās turn to give him a confused look. āItās become increasingly apparent to me that I am not⦠particularly well endowed in the necessary skills to assist you.ā
MorwĆ« frowns. āYouāre helping me get Mikhail back. What else is there?ā
āThereās the question of your happiness. Your wellbeing in the long term.ā
MorwĆ«ās brand begins to ache. He doesnāt understand what Esteldur means. His happiness? He doesnāt even know what that would look like. Itās so inconceivable that it parses as potentially treasonous. āI can keep going fine, sir.ā
āStopā calling me that,ā Esteldur says, and MorwĆ« bits his lip. āPlease.ā
āOkay,ā MorwĆ« nods, feeling like heās been hit. Why wonāt Esteldur just do that instead? Itās easier than trying to navigate this minefield.
āCorrect me if Iām wrong,ā Esteldur begin, measuring his words. āBut you appear to me to be under the impression that⦠your presence is something that you need to make up for, by offering⦠sexual favors.ā
MorwĆ« tilts his head. Esteldur seems to find the words hard to say, as if thereās something distasteful about the concept. Isnāt that just the way things are?
āAre you saying you donāt want me? At all?ā MorwĆ« asks.
Esteldur sighs again. āI am saying that it would be quite inappropriate of me to ask such a thing of someone that is so blatantly afraid of me.ā
āI donāt understand.ā
Esteldur mutters something under his breath that MorwĆ« canāt make out.
āI am not one of the humans you have learned to please out of fear of consequence, MorwĆ«. There is very little in this world that you could do that would provoke me to hurt you and even then, it would not be in punishment but in self defense. Do you understand?ā
āYes, sirāā MorwĆ« starts, before cutting himself off. No, not sir. āYes, Esteldur?ā
Esteldur gives him a look. āDo you really.ā
āNot really, but,ā MorwĆ« admits. The reassurances are going over his head a bit. Thereās always something. āI can play along?ā
āNo, I⦠Morwë⦠I have no intention of treating you as a slave. Elves donāt do that. I know in many ways you are still chained by that magic, but that is something that has been done to you. It is not who you are.ā
āWhat I am,ā MorwĆ« corrects Esteldur automatically, without even thinking about it, and something dark crosses Esteldurās face. āIām sorry. Iām trying, but I donāt really understand what youāre saying. What use am I, if you donāt want me?.ā
āYouāre helping me retrieve an old friend,ā Esteldur says. āAnd youāre not the worldās worst company, despite being as skittish as a hare. Youāre⦠I donāt even know why Iāve been going along with this line of thinking. Your worth is not decided by how useful you are.ā
MorwĆ« squints at him. āSo what is it decided by?ā
Esteldur leans backwards for a moment. āI reiterate my previous point about not being the best equipped to assist you⦠but I suppose Iām all youāve got. I almost wish Iād just asked you to mark the way on the mapā¦ā
āIām sorry,ā MorwĆ« says, automatically trying to defend himself from the clear disapproval.
āNo, no. Iām trying to apologize, and Iām doing a horrid job of it.ā Esteldur goes to his bag and withdraws more of that bread. He passes a piece to MorwĆ« and takes one for himself. āGood to not discuss such subjects on an empty stomach. Weāre tired from riding as well. Please, try not to inhale this in one bite this time? It canāt be good for your digestion.ā
MorwĆ« nods mutely and tries to follow Esteldurās example, tearing off pieces and chewing them. He guesses he can follow that order. Esteldur has been giving him it, and he doesnāt seem to be likely to start taking it away now. Still, it feels mind bogglingly slow. Even attempting to force himself to slow down, heās still finished far faster than Esteldur is.
āIs it because Iām ugly?ā MorwĆ« asks once heās done, trying to pretend heās not hurt by the rejection. āI know Iām disgusting and easy, but I promise, I can make up for it. Iām really good with my tongue, thatās what everyone says. Your wife doesnāt have to know.ā
Esteldur finishes his bite, then looks around as if waiting for someone else to show up, but nobody does. āYou are not disgusting, MorwĆ«.ā
āYou clearly think I am.ā MorwĆ«ās tone is bitter, more bitter than he means to let on. He hurries to say, āIām sorry. That was out of line.ā
āYou are correct in recognizing Iām feeling disgust. But not with you. I am disgusted with the people that have taught you that what you would prefer matters so little. I am disgusted with the people that would hurt you so thoroughly that you would preempt their violence by attempting to punish yourself. And to be frank⦠I am disgusted with myself and my people, that we have allowed the horrors youāve undergone to persist in the world.ā
āI donātā¦ā MorwĆ« begins, weakly. He doesnāt understand. Why should what he want matter at all? Heās Móladrin. Thatās just the way things are for them.
āOnce we retrieve Itarata and return to VarnandĆ«, I intend to have words with him, as well as several others. My people have neglected yours for a great length of time, and I am uncertain if this is a wrong we will ever be able to make amends for.ā MorwĆ« thinks first of Mikhail and the fort when Esteldur says your people. After all, he doesnāt say it with an undercurrent of malice at all. But from context⦠āI see you donāt understand, and I am deeply sorry that I am unable to make myself clear.ā
āItās okay,ā MorwĆ« tells him, more than a little lost.
āNo, it is not. And I hope that once you grow to appreciate the severity of the wrongs thatāve been committed against you, you are able to forgive me for the role I have played in enabling them.ā
āAlright,ā MorwĆ« nods. āI forgive you, I think?ā
āThatāsā alright. We can work on this.ā
āIf you say so.ā MorwĆ« feels suddenly very conscious of the way his clothes stick to his body, of all the sharp angles of him. Esteldur is looking at him like MorwĆ« is more naked than he is when heās naked. He looks anywhere but at the older elf. āYouāre saying⦠you donāt want to use me? Even though Iām okay with it?ā
āThereās more to consent than being okay with something, you know.ā That wordā consentā isnāt entirely unfamiliar to MorwĆ«, but Esteldur is using it in a way that MorwĆ« doesnāt understand. What does agreeing to something have anything to do with sex? āEven if I wasnāt marriedā and Iāll point out most people that arenāt soldiers will be at least a touch offended by the implication theyād be willing to cheat on their spouses.ā
āI mean, itās only cheating if itās with a person, right?ā
Esteldur looks like MorwĆ« hit him. MorwĆ« wants to backpedal and apologize but heās still not sure for what. Esteldur composes himself, and MorwĆ« has no idea why heās being so patient. Clearly, MorwĆ« doesnāt understand the rules of his current situation, so why isnāt Esteldur hitting him for breaking them until he figures it out?
āWould it at all be possible,ā Esteldur starts. āFor you to at least⦠pretend that you think of yourself as someone worthy of respect? I wonāt hurt you if you canāt, I can tell thatās a lot to ask.ā
MorwĆ« has absolutely no idea what that looks like. How is he supposed to be afraid of himself? Call himself sir? Follow his own orders? Heās not even sure thatās what Esteldur means, what else does respect look like? The idea is laughable. He hangs his head. If this is what free elves are like, then no wonder humans decided they needed to be broken. This doesnāt make any sense at all. His brand aches, and the pain is like an old friend.
āIāll try, sā Esteldur.ā
āGood,ā Esteldur says, sharply. āIāve no intention of letting anyone hurt you anymore, least of all myself.ā
MorwĆ« doesnāt have anything to say to that, so the two of them fall back into a familiar silence.
homecoming (the long way around) - masterpost
walking the iron path
TW: Discussions of fantasy racism, implied past non-con, past pogroms.
Introducing Esteldur (free elf, caretaker) and his relationship with Morwƫ as the two of them set out on a rescue mission. Plus, worldbuilding. Esteldur POV.
Esteldur watches the other elf. The Mólado.
MorwĆ« is thin. Not the sort of Eldarin build that humans label as thin because of their height but surprisingly thick once you get a good look at them but actually skinny. The sort of skinny you only see on an elf if theyāve been actively starved for an extended period or chronically underfed for decades.
His hair is longer and darker than Esteldurās, and he kept it loose, even through the fighting. Even though it mustāve gotten in the way. Heād spoken to some of the enemy soldiers in Revkian more fluently than with the archaic and foreign dialect of Quenya heās been using to communicate with Esteldur, but he hadnāt looked anything like them. His black hair is as dark as obsidian, shining only in reflection no matter the lighting, and his skin is pale like that of someone from much farther North than even the Great Mountains, where the soldiers had hair that changed from black to brown in the light and ranged mostly from slightly pale to tan.
Esteldur keeps his eyes on the fire, studying MorwĆ« out of the corner of his vision, while MorwĆ«ās gaze flickers from spot to spot. Their combined hearing is good enough to catch any predators or enemies that might try to sneak up on them, thereās no need to keep watch so literally, but he isnāt looking across and out. His gaze catches on the sword at Esteldurās belt, on Esteldurās hands, on Esteldurās lips, but never lingering long enough to grow comfortable.
Esteldur has never met one of the Móladar before. Heās lived in these mountains since the Orontdrim were merely one of countless small nameless and homeless elven bands, almost six hundred years ago now, but even when he was young, he never walked among humans as extensively or with as much enthusiasm for the prospect of exploration as some of these newer Orontdrim do. Of course, as a member of the second generation, he hadnāt had much of a safe haven to grow bored with in his own youth. The world that excites them so just seems tiresome and full of danger to him.
The Orontdrim, having grown into a tribe with dozens of bands across the Great Mountains, learned of the Mólodar from Angiel, the first of those youthful adventurers, when sheād returned near four decades after sheād set out, a hardened gaze that would leave plenty of her elders looking away. That many selfish humans envied elves for their longevity and fertility they brought the land wasnāt news to the eldest Orontdrim, the ones that remembered the Dark Years ā the time of pogroms and exile that drove them into these mountains and sundered them from their brethren.
But that anyone, of any species, would go so far as to use spellcasting to craft a chain that could bind an elf not only in one life but allegedly even into the next⦠that not only had an entire tribe fallen to this fate but that it was the Rethyar, of all of the tribes⦠That Minyas, the oldest elven city, had fallen to humans who would use that dark magicā¦
Esteldur wasnāt the only one whoād found it hard to believe. Heād never doubted Angiel; she was no liar and the steel in her gaze belied sheād seen the sort of horrors that the elder Orontdrim had wanted so badly to protect their descendants from. But heād managed to convince himself such horrors would never reach his door.
At the very least, his loyalty to the man heās perusing goes deeper than what his curse demands of him. The way MorwĆ« says his captainās nameā Esteldur wonders if he sounds the same with Itarata in his mouth. What could this Mikhail, a soldier of the very Empire that enslaved MorwĆ«, have done to earn not only MorwĆ«ās obedience but also his love? Angiel and many of the youthful adventurers that had followed the Iron Path sheād set out were been insistent that the brand could only bind, it could never create anything in the one who bore it.
MorwĆ« can bear no physical scars from his time in the Empire, aside from the brand. Elves, no matter which tribe they might originate from, heal from any sort of wound inflicted by natural means completely. They donāt get sick, they donāt suffer infection. That is to say, just Esteldur can see no evidence of physical abuse beyond his malnourishment. thereās a skittishness to him that Esteldur, in all his centuries, has never seen before in an elf. Perhaps never seen before, period.
Skittish and also eagerly deferential. Excessively so. Esteldur knows heās got a bit of presenceā it comes with the territory of being only around two centuries shy of a thousand years old. Younger elves, especially ones who have never lived at Fendetaras let alone passed it, will pay him heed. They fall in behind him rather than beside or ahead of him on instinct. Perhaps this is all thatās occurring but more profound as Esteldur is likely the first free elf that MorwĆ«ās ever met.
Of course, heās barely engaged MorwĆ« in conversation at all. Itās a combination of his own reticence to ask questions he doesnāt really want the answers to and MorwĆ«ās tendency to reply to any questions asked as efficiently as possible, with no room for ambiguity. Esteldurās never been the best at small talk anyways ā his wife tends to speak for the both of them, when the two of them are together, and there is rarely anything that Itarata says that Esteldur feels the need to contradict. Still, he doubts either of those two would know what to make of MorwĆ«.
He is young. No older than two hundred and likely far from that. Itās difficult to describe exactly how Esteldur can tell, theyāre of a similar height, and thereās not exactly physical signs of aging in the way wrinkles or grey hair might betray an older human. MorwĆ«ās demeanor might betray it, but the subtle differences between the world weariness of one who has seen horrors they could not and would not describe and one who has simply lived for near a millennia arenāt always the easiest to parse. Particularly for those whom a century is all they get.
As if Esteldur hasnāt seen plenty of horrors of his own. His motherās screams echo in his mind, just as his fatherās blood threatens to stain him all over again. Neither of them were that much older than MorwĆ« is now. Itarataās sister hadnāt even made it to that age when sheād been cut down, her body desecrated as greedy hands tore every gem that Esteldur had cut for her from their settings.
ā¦That was the last time heād walked among humans. But of course, that was long before the Iron Path was set. All paths had been so dark back then. Perhaps these recollections, impossible for him to erase even as the bodies of the ones he once loved have long since been consumed by the earth they were left on, are the reason reason why he resides at Fendetaras, a perpetual watch dog, the reason he amongst all of the Orontdrim would chase Itarata. Why his beloved would not only give permission for him to go but demand it of him, even as the day of their daughterās marriage grows close. Most of the survivors of those dark days have more effectively laid their memories to rest, not quite as haunted as they were when theyād begun to build new homes, but the three of themā¦
He shakes his head, as if the simple motion is enough to dismiss the memories of his own youth rising unbidden. MorwĆ«ās gaze goes from flickering to focused, his eyes going wide at just the simple gesture. As if the shake of the head is an expression of displeasure with him. When Esteldur looks at MorwĆ« next, he looks at him head on.
āAre you alright?ā Esteldur asks, the frozen terror that MorwĆ«ās posture radiates impossible to ignore. He realizes, all of a sudden, that he hasnāt asked that this entire time. Itās been a busy day, but he still feels like heās committed some horrible crime of neglect.
āWhat? Yeah, Iām fine. You got injured worse than I did.ā In addition to probably being a good number of decades out of date and affected by a profound Revkian accent, his Quenya a different dialect than Esteldur is used to. Some of the latter youthful adventurers that had followed the Iron Path brought Rethyarin refugees whoād survived the fall of Minyas back with them, so Esteldur is capable of recognizing the more major differences in vocabulary.
āIāve endured a great deal in my time. Iāll heal,ā Esteldur tells MorwĆ«. Itās true, although perhaps not entirely honest. Itās been a great length of time since he has engaged in serious battle. The Orontdrim build good defenses and few intruders have gotten close enough to Fendetaras to even threaten to harm them. Esteldurās wounds from the fight with the Revkian soldiers that MorwĆ« called āthe usurpersā sting, more so than heād like to admit, but itās not the cuts and bruises that gets to him.
Itarata. His commander, his closest friend, in the hands of an unknown enemy. And who knows what else will follow? The old Emperor might have been a bastard, but heād known that the Orontdrim werenāt worth the cost of trying to conquer. Not to mention, there were treaties that were supposed to be in place, trade deals that any sane heir would want to be maintained.
Those deals with an Empire that had inherited the slaving ways of its forefathers and which clearly descended from the kingdoms and tribes that perpetuated the pogroms of the Dark Days mightāve grated against the morals of the more self righteous amongst the Orontdrim, Esteldur himself included in their ranks, but everyone agreed that the alternative, of forcing war, would end with expulsion for the lucky and that same enslavement for those who were not.
āHm,ā Esteldur says. MorwĆ« narrows his eyebrows in suspicion, as if he himself hadnāt been offering up borderline monosyllabic responses earlier in the night. From most younger elves, Esteldur wouldāve expected an interrogation at allusions to older times. His daughter certainly loves pestering him about all of the centuries heād spent before her birth, and she was raised in a cradle of elvenkind, never forcibly torn from it as still a young child as the Móladar are said to be. The two of them might be from different tribes, but theyāre part of the same nation, arenāt they?
āYou donāt have to worry about me slowing you down,ā MorwĆ« insists all of a sudden after a pause, as though thatās what Esteldur was even thinking of. Perhaps he was unable to interpret the āhmā and simply filled it in with something that made sense to him. He continues, not particularly daunted by Esteldurās half shrug. āAnd. Um. I mean, I told you, I can be useful.ā
āI already agreed that I needed you,ā Esteldur replies, a little bemused and more than slightly unnerved by how defensive MorwĆ« seems to be getting at such an innocuous comment. Theyād been sitting in silence for whatās probably been hours, if Esteldur could be bothered to consider such things. Esteldur, at the very least, found the rest, well, restful, even if heād been worrying the entire time. MorwĆ«, on the other hand, seems just as tightly wound as before. If anything, Esteldur would say heād looked calmer when heād been cornered by those former allies. At the very least, less jittery. Thereād been something dead in those eyes in the moments before Esteldur had cut down the man heād called Dmitri.
āI mean, yeah,ā MorwĆ« says, hurrying past that. āI know you have someone to rescue too. But if you need anything else, um. While weāre on the way. You did save my life and stuff.ā
MorwĆ«ās face is slightly red, and Esteldurās unsure of why. āI know this part of the land better than you do, Iām fairly certain. You can take charge when we get closer, if thereās anything I havenāt been accounting for.ā
MorwĆ«ās opening his mouth to spout off something even more confusing before Esteldurās even done with his sentence, but the last words seem to throw him for a loop. At least Esteldur isnāt alone in being lost in this conversation.
āAre you sure? But Iāmāā MorwĆ« drops the end of the sentence, looking sheepish. Esteldur can only guess at what he meant by that. An elf, probably.
āSorry,ā MorwĆ« says, and then calls Esteldur something in Revkian. Esteldur shrugs helplessly. He has nothing to guide him through this conversation.
Esteldur tries most days to not think poorly of humans because of the ways some of them have done their species a disservice. Itās not as though humans have a monopoly on bastardryā it was at least in part the actions of other elves that drove the band that would become the Orontdrim away from Mithras to begin with, even if Esteldur canāt reasonably hold them accountable for the devastation that followed that icing out.
It is very difficult not to curse humanity as a whole on nights like these.
Esteldur does not know what was done to MorwĆ« that he thinks of his own kind as inherently lesser. He does not know how MorwĆ« could bring himself to love a commanding officer that would exist in a system that kept him in chains, magical or physical. An officer that would let him go hungry for so long that heād look like this. He canāt even begin to imagine what it would take, were he in MorwĆ«ās shoes, not to despise the entire species for the actions of what must be almost every single one heās met so far.
Selfishly, Esteldur doesnāt care about this. Doesnāt think to try to help MorwĆ«. All Esteldur cares about in this moment is saving Itarata beforeā
He doesnāt let himself think about what itāll be before.
