So to continue with my story from yesterday. When I walked into the estate sale one of the ladies that works there held this up and said, “Is this the book you were looking for?” I just about fell over and almost burst into tears!!! It may not look like anything to you all but this is everything to me!!!This is actually the very first edition of Steve Martin’s book titled “Cruel Shoes” that was published by William ‘Bill’ Dailey in 1977 in a limited run of only 750 copies, this being number 632. It was published just before Steve Martin’s first appearance on Saturday Night Live which catapulted him to stardom. It was handmade at William and Victoria Dailey’s Press of the Pegacycle Lady, Los Angeles. They received thousands of orders that they were unable to fill and in 1979 another edition came out with Steve Martin’s image on the cover as he was really famous by then! I don’t know how it happened that it reappeared but all I know is it was meant to be! I was told it sold the first day. It was the one thing I really wanted. I was not even aware this edition existed until @handledestatesales put it up on their preview pictures advertising the estate sale. There is a long story attached to the meaning behind this book for me which I may share another time but needless to say it had something to do with how I ended up connecting to my ex-husband when we first met. To own the publisher’s personal copy is beyond amazing!!! The estate sale was held at William Dailey s house and he was the longtime proprietor of Dailey Rare Books, a landmark on the Los Angeles book scene for over 40 years. I would love to know how he came to publish Steve Martin’s book in the first place as it seems out of place with his other publications. If you want to know more about him look him up as his story is very interesting. Another fabulous find from yesterday at the estate sale held by @handledestatesales. This is a fantastic leather vanity and jewelry traveling case circa 1940’s in fantastic condition!!! Those were the days to have traveled in when you boarded the plane dressed up and carried all your beauty products and accessories with you and then when you arrived at your destination you would set this up in your hotel room on your dressing table. Today you have to put all your liquid beauty products in a tiny plastic bag and never let your jewelry out of your sight and consider yourself lucky if there is a shelf in the bathroom to put everything on. Never mind a proper dressing table to sit at and do your makeup. My how times have changed!!! Take me back… I returned today and did some real damage!!! I haven’t even unloaded the car yet. I could have bought a lot more!!! The one thing I really wanted went the first day or did it??? A couple of well loved paint palettes from an estate sale. I heard the wait in the line was 2 1/2 hours yesterday so I decided to stop by today an hour before they closed. There was still a line but not too long. I didn’t have very much time once I actually got in though so I may have to swing by tomorrow. Still so much there including endless amounts of books and art to go through. I have my eye on a couple of items.
