This one's actually easy to answer.

I'd let them save my life.

When I was 18 I had a surgery where I had a 70% chance of not making it / dying. I also had a 70% chance of having a major stroke (and therefore brain damage) and about a 65% chance of having major paralysis and nerve damage. I had a tumour in my neck and they had to remove two of my arteries - including the internal carotid artery which is er, you know, the main way blood gets to the brain - and the majority of the people who'd previous had this surgery didn't make it. Including people in my own family. (This is the genetic cancer I talk about having sometimes.)

I only (barely) knew one of the people who came together in the team to not only knock me unconscious and cut me open, but who had to save my life when I entered hypertensive crisis. There wasn't much literature about this at the time, but since we've learned that if you touch these tumours with needles or scalpels, they will cause a catastrophic adrenaline event that leads to hypertensive crisis, and that's why most people don't survive these surgeries. (Basically you die of what could be colloquially termed a batshit insane fight/flight response).

All of those people were strangers. The nurses who helped me shower and picked dried blood out of my ear (er, the HUGE neck wound I had needed to be left open at a part and I bled *everywhere.*) The nurses who put in and removed my catheter so I didn't need to go to the toilet. The nurses who checked on my oxygen stats to make sure I wasn't dying and the one nurse who was really pissed off that I wasn't in the controlled coma I was supposed to be in because the meds didn't work. The anaesthetists, the other surgeon I didn't meet, the nurses in that operating room.

All of them were strangers. And I let them help save my life.

And I'd do it again.
