BALITANG LOKAL: Negros Island Region marks 53rd Anniversary of PH's martial law with peaceful protests in Bacolod, Escalante and Dumaguete despite issues of flood-control and ghost projects nationwide [#OnlyOnOneNETnews]
(Written by Miko Kubota-Nieves / Ka-Serbisyo Patrol #4 news reporter of OneNETnews & Station Manager and President of ONC Holdings)
DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- Almost 5 and a half decades since the late-former dictator and 10th Philippine president "Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr." announced the entire Philippines of the declaration of martial law throughout the archipelago when Filipinos organized the anniversary with demonstrations and a clear reminder of the country's unresolved grievances. Hours after the grand opening of "Cherie's Cheesecake House" last Sunday afternoon (September 21st, 2025 -- Dumaguete local time), events in Negros Island Region were relatively peaceful while Metro Manila witnessed violent confrontations.
Protesters at the Trillion [Philippine] Peso March (TPM), condemned corruption relating to flood-control and so-called ghost projects citing the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Discaya family, and several suspected officials as complicit in schemes that betray taxpayers and erode public trust. The group declared that non-corrupt officials would not get their hands on completed projects. In various parts of Asia, international protesters such as Nepal and Indonesia have used the Japanese manga and anime character of "One Piece" as a banner of resistance against injustice and authoritarianism.
A male protester was killed with stab wounds and one wounded with a gunshot injury admitted to a medical hospital in Metro Manila as reported by the Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson and assistant secretary 'Albert Francis Edralin Domingo'. Lone protester was declared dead on arrival. The injured person was taken to the surgery and is reported to be under care. 47 protesters of the Recto Avenue and Mendiola protest were taken to JRMMC.
Here in Negros Island Region, media reports from Bacolod, Escalante and Dumaguete City described generally peaceful demonstrations. Organizers estimated about 6,000 participants, with no major incidents reported during the 53rd anniversary observances. Dumaguete Press Club (DPC) president and DYEM-FM 96.7mhz's Bai Radio reporter 'Choy Rodriguez Gallarde' said they expected around 30 local media members to cover the event.
Before internet public television station 'OneNETtv Channel' and American cartoon show 'Glitch Techs', we are about to tell you what happened 53 years ago as according to local radio station DYSR-AM 840khz. Silliman University temporarily shut down after the declaration of martial law in 'Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental' Saturday night (September 23rd, 1972). Faculty and students faced arrests and, in some cases, torture. The university resumed operations within months, by October of that year, and implemented new security measures around campus.
More than a decade later on September 26th, 1985 in 'Escalante, Negros Occidental', regional government forces opened fire on unarmed civilians, including members of the "Welga sang Pumuluyo" movement, killing at least 20 people and injuring many others. That massacre became a defining atrocity of the post–martial law era. Currently for this year in 2025, by contrast, local farmers in the region have been able to sell their produce without the threat of provincial violence.
The history of corruption in the Philippines remains corrosive and lasting, even after the military dictatorship was finally abolished. It weakens the institutions, increases inequality, and is quite cynical to the populace. The issue of abuse and impunity will persist into future generations unless accountability is implemented, transparency is enhanced, and civic institutions are reinforced.

A Shower & A Shave - Escalante, UT
We booked into Canyons of Escalante RV Park for one night - need to get cleaned up and do a bit of laundry before we head back into the monument for a few more days.
I forgot to share a story from our stay along Hole-in-the-Rock Road, so I am going to add it now. One evening, I looked out our camper window and spotted a tall pole next to a camper parked near us. The pole was taller than the camper and looked like one of those poles you hang plants from. I thought that was strange, but didn't think too much of it. Thirty minutes later, I look out the window again and see this:
What the HECK?? It looked like a huge bird, but we really couldn't tell. Doug decided to walk a bit closer to see if he could figure out what it was. It was a blue and yellow macaw! I can't believe that someone would actually have a bird that big inside their trailer - unbelievable. Sometimes we see the strangest things. It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round. We could here the macaw screeching a short time later and noticed that they did take it inside as darkness approached. Just crazy!
