The abandoned Carthusian monastery of Escaladei (Camp de Tarragona, Catalonia) in 1985.
Founded in the year 1194 in a place that was considered a desert (uninhabited), it existed for 7 centuries until their lands were seized by the government in 1835. In the next two years, the villagers sacked the monastery, who had been their feudal lords for centuries, taking back the riches and reusing its stones for their homes. In 1843, it was sold to private owners.
In 1990, the Government of Catalonia bought it and rehabilitated the surviving spaces. Since 1992, it's open for visitors, who can see the remaining ruins, a rebuilt monk cell, the gardens, and archaeological work still continues. Since 2025, a room with virtual-reality glasses allows visitors to see how the monastery looked in its moments of splendour.
