I'd like to politely disagree with the notion that ESAs are a type of service dog. I think the distinction is important and actually beneficial!
Service dogs require extensive training and a prolonged commitment to maintaining this training. This is what makes them well-behaved enough to be in all public spaces. That being said, that makes them very expensive to breed and train, which can be a barrier. I know the ideal would be for this barrier to be removed, but that's just not the reality for most people.
ESAs, on the other hand, do not need this training. Yes they are well-trained, as are many pet dogs, but they do not perform specific tasks to provide targeted support. That would be a psychiatric service dog. This makes the process of getting and maintaining an ESA much easier, which is more accessible to people who could have difficulties caring for a service dog due to physical or mental disabilities. The lower standards for what makes an ESA means more people can have them.
While ESAs provide an important support, their training and standards just aren't the same as service dogs. Countless service dogs have been attacked by ESAs which are illegally brought into buildings. In my opinion the best way to provide support for people who need it is for psychiatric service dogs to be more easily attained, not for ESAs to be seen on the same level as service dogs.

I greatly appreciate you being kind.
That's totally valid.
That's not exactly what I said though.
Firstly, I believe dogs (and miniature horses in some cases) should not be the only animals allowed to be service animals.
Secondly, I believe there should not be a separation because they all assist disabled people in one way or another.
Thirdly, dogs and miniature horses are not the only animals that can be trained if needed.
Fourth, providing emotional support is already a service.
Fifth, (this isn't something I said in the original post, but I want to say it) I fully believe it should be a lot easier for anyone to get the animal(s) they need.
You are absolutely entitled to your opinion.
