#Pacers hoping 2021 #NBADraft is a silver anniversary edition of the historic 1996 version
If then GM Donnie Walsh hadn’t been enamored with Erick Dampier in the 1996 Draft, Kobe Bryant might have been photograhed here biting a Pacers jersey. Twenty-five years ago, the arc of the NBA changed and so did the Indiana Pacers. That’s how good the 1996 NBA Draft was. Another one bites the dust in my ACCC's wake. This time it is the 1997-1998 Collector's Choice of Erick Dampier. Dampier was an All-American at Mississippi State (the same year I watched Syracuse get to the final, and lose) then a lottery pick of the Pacers in 1996. After his rookie season, he was part of the trade that brought Chris Mullin to the Pacers. He played a half a decade in Golden State before signing an egregiously exorbitant contract with Dallas. One season of 12 and 12 I guess makes you a near-max contract guy. In both sets of Mavs/Heat finals, he was on the losing team. The first time as a valiant stopper for Dallas then as a ring chaser on the Heat. Shaquille O'Neal once referred to Dampier as Ericka for his "soft" play. I just call him Ericka because he shoots the ball LIKE A GIRL. Now Erick Dampier will have me killed.
