Promises, promises: FISA, secret courts, unconstitutional practices, and promises there was no torture at Gitmo; it's not 2009 anymore. Where's that apology?

In 2009, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder appointed a special prosecutor to investigate CIA torture practices and the release of the former CIA inspector general's report on abysmal treatment of detainees.
President Barack Obama announced the closing of Guantanamo and the ending of "enhanced interrogation techniques." Neither happened, and Obama was reelected.
In 2021, Amnesty International published a report on ongoing human rights violations at Guantánamo Bay, criticizing the detainees' inadequate medical care and indefinite imprisonment without fair trials.
💥🚨 Abu Zubaydah was one of three “forever prisoners” at Guantánamo Bay who was used as a human guinea pig in the CIA's post-9/11 torture program.
Forever prisoners? Secret courts? That's unconstitutional! So is torture.
TL;DR
🤯 His descriptions of the inhumane techniques he was made to suffer through are harrowing, and his sketches portray tortures such as waterboarding, being exposed nakedly to a female interrogator, threats to desecrate the Qur’an, and worse.
🚨 In 2023, UN human rights investigator Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, who was given unprecedented access to Guantánamo Bay detention center, submitted a report that every single inmate she spoke with endured the constant harms brought on by "systematic rendition, torture, and arbitrary detention," and demanded an apology and assurances that the crimes would not recur.
In 2023, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin demanded an apology.
💥 Also in 2023, a military judge at Guantánamo Bay ruled that a 9/11 defendant, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, was incapable of facing trial. The abuses he endured had driven him permanently psychotic.
💥🚨It's 2026. Nobody can apologize to Ramzi bin al-Shibh or Abu Zubaydah, and anyway, face it. It's too little, too late.
