In flight, this guy kind of resembled a wasp -- very hovery, with little perceptible motion in the wings. When it landed, you could tell it was a moth. It was wiggling its fat, feathery antennae around, climbing higher up the grass.
There are a few species of tiger moths that are wasp mimics. Most of these moths are classified in the subtribe Euchromiina, and their North American range is usually limited to the Gulf Coast. I think this specimen might be in a different subtribe, Ctenuchina, which has more species that live in my area.
(While researching this moth, I found out that Butterflies and Moths of North America has a regional species checklist, where you can find out what lepidoptera are in your county. Iโm not sure how complete or updated the lists are -- only one genus and none of the species I thought this guy might be were on there, but itโs probably a good starting point to find out if more well-known species are in your area.)
