journalists are identifying unfamiliar political symbols used by militants at the January 6 rally which culminated in the violent storming of the Capitol by Trump followers who telegraphed their ideologies through colors, flags, clothes & logos. Some groups incl. the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers, the Gadsden Flag, the 2nd Amendmenters, were already chronicled by journalists. Some were unique to the event, which was distinct from its antecedents by the presence of new, specific symbols. Without access to the meaning of symbols worn on patches & flags & tattoos, we may miss a contradiction between what a person says & a symbol they wear says about their beliefs.
