Epictetus
"Our good, just as our evil, exists only in our will."
- Epictetus
suffering grows when we cling to people or things as if they can never change or leave. attachment turns love into fear, so when loss comes, it can feel like losing yourself. let go of that unhealthy attachment before suffering forces it on you.
[Zeus] has provided each of us with an individual guardian deity, which stays by our side and is in charge of looking after us - a guardian who never sleeps and is impossible to distract. Is there any guardian to whose care he could have committed us that is better or more vigilant? Whenever you close your doors and turn out your lights, remember, never say to yourself that you are alone; you're not. God is inside, and so is your private deity, and neither of them requires a light to watch you by.

The Enchiridion
In the popular cartoon series Adventure Time (a personal favorite), the Enchiridion is a legendary book of heroism which contains codes of conduct, moral guidance, and tests for heroes.
In reality, the Enchiridion is a book of stoic philosophy compiled by Arrian, a student of Epictetus around the 2nd century CE. It's basically a practical guide to living well with a foundation on how to think, act, and respond to events in ways that lead to inner peace and freedom. This book focuses on core aspects, like control and acceptance, judgement over events, and facing hardships in life.
"Enchiridion" translates to "handbook" or "manual."
I've always loved the concept of this book in Adventure Time, but I loved learning that it has an epic foundation in our reality.
It's incredible how relatable much of the context is nearly 1,900 years later.
