it's like they just wanted to check the box of Male Lead Must Suffer to be with Female Lead without any reason why he must suffer. His uncle isn't the boss of him, especially since way back whenever he thought it was his uncle who tried to assassinate him (I think it was actually Wei Xuan but whatever, who knows what isn't established)

we're also missing Fan Changyu getting super angry and telling Xie Zheng that if he keeps self harming or putting himself in dangerous situations over their relationship she's leaving him because she can't bear watching him suffer

love the way this show gives its men just a tad of five o'clock shadows when they've been sleeping in tents or, in this case, when they've been sick for like a week
