The engraved text effect or also known as letterpress effect is very popular for Web 2.0 style websites. So I’ll teach you how to do it. It’s very easy to create using Photoshop. I’m using CS5 but you can also create one using CS3.  So, here’s how to do it.

Step 1. Open a new document.

Step 2. Draw a rectangle using rectangle tool

Step 3. Create a layer style found on blending options. Choose a gradient of your choice on gradient overlay.

Step 4. Put a text above the rectangle.

Step 5. Then create a layer style found on blending options

Step 6. After you create the text you put layer styles on the text. For the text to look like engraved or letterpressed, you need to use two styles. First is use color overlay which allows you to choose the color of the text. If you want to skip this, you may also by specifying the desired font color. Next is the inner shadow that allows you to create the effect. You have to adjust opacity, size, angle and distance to get the desired engraved look.

Step 7. Lastly, the secret behind the effect is to add another text style which will better let you get the engraved text look. So we need the gradient style you used for the rectangle. All you have to do is adjust the Size of the stroke to 1, choose the Fill style > Gradient.

Here’s the final engraved text style or letterpress text effect made using Photoshop.
