I remember seeing the movie Enemy Mine when I was in high school. It was on tv and I remember sitting with my mom watching it and asking her “I’m not sure if this is a good or bad movie.”
It was released in 1985 and is about two enemies, an alien and a human, crash landed on a distant planet and having to survive together.
Ok, so it was based on a novella, and that was the plot of the novella, but the movie clearly wanted a big climax so they added a huge subplot about how the aliens who the humans captured were used as slaves in this big mine in space.
This was added because apparently, studio interference came up and said you can’t have a movie called Enemy Mine without having a mine.
Which is stupid since clearly ‘enemy mine’ was simply a way of saying ‘my enemy’. Adding a subplot about a mine for NO REASON takes the personal story of reconsideration of prejudices and makes it into a low budget Dune knockoff.
What does this have to do with anything?
I knew this story ages ago, well before watching Sherlock. When I first heard Mycroft saying “brother mine” I used to think of this movie and him mining Sherlocks, because the audience would be too dumb to not know that he was using a kind of fond nickname for Sherlock.
I told my therapist about Project Hail Mary and she told me about Enemy Mine and boy howdy were those crazy movies to watch back to back
