Better time than any to bring up a New Years tradition this family has!

It’s basically Hunger Games but with one person. A random person in the family (aside from Lilith) are chosen to be the Bait. Which means that for 24 hours, that person has a ‘warrant out for their arrest.’ meaning literally EVERYBODY ELSE in the family has to hunt down that person and get them past the threshold of Lilith’s throne room. If the Bait survives those 24 hours, they get like 1,500 snails. If someone catches the Bait, they get 3 Get Out Of Trouble Free passes from Lilith they can use whenever. Eda is RUTHLESS in both roles. Only Luz can help sniff her out but it’s next to impossible to restrain her.

There can only be one person who catches the Bait, meaning there’s a fight to bring the Bait to Lilith. There are people who are easy Bait’s, but really good searchers and vice versa. Since it’s 24 hours, plenty of people have time to sleep but since they’re also in a competition, practically NOBODY sleeps during that time trying to find the Bait.  Luz was the Bait once and spent most of her time being a reckless little shit in the middle of Bonesborough. Normally she wouldn’t have been caught, but Amity turned the flirty tables on her and she was Out. Jerbo as the Bait just hung out at The Knee with a bunch of supplies n was able to outlast everyone. Viney was a little shit and literally hid INSIDE THE CASTLE the entire round like 1 room away from Lilith and everyone hated her for it bc it wasn’t technically cheating but goddamnit it Felt Like It. King hid in Hooty’s mouth for a few hours before breaking free and getting caught by Gus, who later had King stolen from him by Barcus, and then he was stolen by Eda, who won. Emira literally just called in a favor from the Bat Queen n hung at her place until Edric & Amity showed up to beat her ass and they were all kicked out. Edric won.

Lilith gets most of it because here I am I’m about to reveal it: Lilith becomes the Empress SURPRISE Listen she’s the only one who knows how this shit works n she went through a HELL of an arc in those 4 years. Also they don’t trust anybody else (since they can easily keep an eye on her) and she used to be the Coven leader, so this isn’t too big of a stretch.

She DOES totally kiss up to them. Kikimora, above all else, is an opportunist. She joined the biggest ruler in the area and stuck to that. Once it was clear Belos was gonna lose, she just Yote. She was Gone. Then she came back and tried to get in a good word with Lilith.

Lilith is bad at being in a rebellion, but she was part of the Emperor’s Coven for years and knows how the whole thing works. She knows how being a government head goes and out of everyone, is the most trusted to know what she’s doing with that power. What I keep neglecting to bring up is that while Lilith is bad at first she changes. It’s been 4 years, a lot happened in that time.

Also, living in the rebellion she’s seen firsthand what its like to be middle class and lower. She’s experienced in the government and knows what the Isles looks like. She can’t sneak around and perform rescue missions but she can listen to ideas and accept the changing ideas that’s given to her. She still gets an Advisor and a Council, so while she is the ‘head’ of power, she also has 5 other people who share it with her. She’s more of just there to remember what happened before all of this as she and Amity make sure things don’t go haywire.
