All will be well... The tragedy of the Blue Lanterns
In fearful day, in raging night,
With strong hearts full, our souls ignite.
When all seems lost in the War of Light,
Look to the stars, for hope burns bright!
The Blue Lanterns are gone...
In the aftermath of the Rise of the Third Army and the Wrath of the First Lantern, the Blue Lantern Corps are all but gone. St. Walker is the last known remaining member of what is considered to be one of the most powerful of the Emotional Spectrum. He once lost his ring due to losing hope after learning that the emotional spectrum is a finite pool of energy that can be depleted and cause the end of all things. He later regained the ring after being inspired by the White Lantern Kyle Rayner. Powered by Hope, the Blue Lanterns can only realize their true power by being near a Green Lantern, Hope being fueled by Will. When close to a Green, they can use the same powers as a Green and will supercharge the Green Rings to over 100%. The Blues can heal and cure wounds as well as remove the Red Rings corruptible influence over it’s wielder. It’s power can be intensified by the hope of others within the area. Orange Rings are disabled when near a Blue Ring, leaving the main powers of flight and the protective aura that all rings provide.
St. Walker is the last(while Kyle can use the powers of a Blue, he is still the White Lantern), but I believe that the Corps will soon see a resurgence.
Hope is a hard thing to have at times. We all have had moments where it seems that nothing will go right and we lose hope in ourselves. It sometimes takes someone else to help us when these things happen. I think that is the allegory behind the Blue Lanterns. They are hope, but hope alone cannot win the day.
About 5 years ago, I looked into the abyss, despite Nietzsche's warnings It not only gazed back into me, it consumed me. He also warned about fighting monsters, lest ye become one. I lost my fight with the monster that lies in us all and became that monster. I admit without hope, I’d probably be less of the man I am now.
I see a lot in the Blues... I don’t believe that I would be chosen by the Corps due to the fact that hope is not my strong point. I do believe that Hope empowers and heals those around them. Hope alone does nothing without people to believe in that hope. It’s interesting how the most powerful of the Emotional Spectrum is the most difficult to wield. I want to create an image of the loss of Hope and the possibility of it’s return.
