Critiquing fic helps me figure out what i like about the tv show. Ie read something that i feel failed in a few ways like 1) differentiating rob and ron 2) social awareness. #1 pretty simple, different characters who react differently. fic i read didnβt do too badly here.
#2 constantly does way worse in fanwork. itβs a subtle thing that i couldnt figure out if the show was doing or not til i compared it to what fic lacked. social structures must inform behaviour. it doesnt need to be stated outright or be the explicit source of conflict. but nonetheless you can tell when the work is aware of it. Ie the scrapyard and farm dont mean the same things to ron and rob respectively because of both characterization and their social positions. scrapyard is aaronβs independence (necessarily bc of his historical ostracization), farm is robertβs empire (necessarily heβs the head of). these themes have always been rob ron. its all jumbled up and its all important and the show is constantly aware of how important all these layers are. and i know theyre aware bc fic demonstrates how it looks to be unaware. unforch i love my source material
