I started writing this story more than a year ago. It is complete at 11 chapters and will be updated weekly. I’m also only posting it on Elysian Fields; I love my AO3 readers to death, but this fic might be the most critical I’ve ever been of Angel (which, depending on who you ask, is saying something), and I’m reluctant to share it in non-Spuffy spaces.
A few things: this is a claim fic, but it’s not like any claim fic I’ve ever written. The inspiration comes from a fan theory I stumbled upon once, though I can’t tell you who posited it or when, if it was during my first iteration in fandom or since I came back. All I know is it stuck with me until I decided I needed to explore it. Credit to whoever came up with that, though. I wish I’d done a better job of recording things.
Also, if you’re a fan of claims, this might not be the fic for you. In my past life, I was known for writing claims in every fic, whether or not it made sense for the plot. I am very fond of those stories and claims in general, but it’s not something that has cropped into anything I’ve started since 2017, and that’s because they don’t appeal to me the way they once did. I introduce new lore in this fic about what claims are, how they’re formed, and their effects, and pretty much all of it is unflattering. So again, if claims are your jam, proceed with caution. The intent is not to bash claims at all (again, I am very fond of them, even if that fondness has changed), but explore other ways the fanon lore could be used in Buffyverse.
