Thanks for the tag @abomination-unto-nuggan (several weeks ago now⊠oops)
A couple months ago, @outofangband sent me a Silm ask in which I talked about my headcanon that Nellas has magic forest powers. That got me thinking, and then I started writing a fic about her. Itâs split between scenes with Nellas and her friends, LĂșthien, Nimloth, and Galadriel, and the aftermath of the second kinslaying, where Nellas rescues ElurĂn and ElurĂ©d. Itâs currently about 40k words and Iâm getting close to finishing. Thank you @outofangband! Iâm excited about this fic and it wouldnât have happened without you.
Anyway hereâs a snippet!
âNellas?â ElurĂ©d said in alarm as she buried her face in her hands. âWhatâs wrong?â
âAre you okay?â ElurĂn asked.Â
âIâm okay,â Nellas said. âI just miss my home.â
The boys nodded seriously.
âI miss my home too,â said ElurĂ©d. âI miss the castle. It was really big, and we liked exploring it and finding new things.â
âWe liked watching the marchwardens practicing,â said ElurĂn. âIn the courtyard. They would duel each other and it was so cool to watch! We wanted to try, but they said we were too little, and one day theyâd teach us. But one time, Mablung gave us some wooden swords and let us fight him. And we won!â
âI think he let us win,â said ElurĂ©d.
âYeah but we still won!â
âAnd exploring the city too,â said ElurĂ©d. âWe got to see a lot of stuff. Like we would visit the blacksmithâs forge, or the wood carving place, or the bakery. One of the bakers gave us some cinnamon rolls. I really liked that part.â
âI miss my room,â said ElurĂn, his eyes lighting up. âWe had two rooms but they were right next to each other, and they had a secret passage going between them. It wasnât really secret, but we called it a secret passage. I had a bed that had a CANOPY. Which is like a roof for your bed, so itâs kind of like this tent! Except it was fancier. And I had all my stuffies on my bed too. I had so many stuffies! I had my bear stuffy that was my favorite. And I had a sheep stuffy and a llama stuffy and a dinosaur stuffy and a bunny stuffy and also a puppy dog stuffy.âÂ
âI had stuffies too,â said ElurĂ©d. âOur mother made stuffies for us sometimes. I liked playing with them. And we had pictures painted in our rooms. Trees on the walls, and stars on the ceiling. We got to help paint them. We got to put our thumbprints on the walls and they made them into bees. So there are bees on the wall made of our thumbprints. And,â he added excitedly âThere were windows in our rooms with little seats next to them. We put pillows on the seats, and you can sit there and look out the window down into the courtyard and see everyone. Or you can sit in the window and read. I love my room.â
âAnd Naneth and Adar and Elwing,â said ElurĂn. âI miss them.â
The tears were growing thicker in Nellasâs eyes. When she went to wipe them off her cheeks, she found they had frozen.
âIâve lived in the forest all my life,â she told them. Her throat was too tight to say more than âI never thought I would leave it.â
ElurĂn nodded. Then he said âDo you need a hug?â
She was startled by the question, but she nodded. ElurĂn crawled into her lap and wrapped his arms around her. ElurĂ©d burrowed against her side, and she pressed her head against ElurĂnâs and put her arms around them both.
She still had a little material left over. It probably would have been smarter to save it, make it into bandages or something. Instead, she glanced at the children and started making more marks.
After another hour or more, she had two lumpy, roughly round balls of cloth, filled with grass and sewn shut. Sheâd then marked little smiling faces on them with charcoal, and sewn on her best impression of an ear. They had four legs that were nothing more than long strips of cloth sewn on, since she really didnât have enough space or time to add stuffed legs. They looked more than anything like white potatoes with weird ribbons growing out of them. They were not soft; in fact, the grass stuffing poked you if you tried to squeeze it. There was no distinction between the head and body. They had to be the worst stuffed sheep anyone had ever made. But sheâd made do with the materials she had, and she wanted the children to have something that reminded them of home.
