Kristen stands in front of her parents, the vast throne room feeling emptier by the second. Her parents' words ring in her ears and she feels her chest constrict.

“Why?” 

“It’s for you, my darling.” Kristen’s mother answers, crossing her ankles and leaning back in her throne. “You need to find a husband, and we can invite nobles from other kingdoms to strengthen our connections. It’s a win for us all.” 

“So I just have to marry some random prince that I meet that night?” Kristen protests. 

“It’s three nights.” Kristen’s father answers, his face stern as he looks down at her. “You’ll have plenty of time.”

“If you don’t pick someone during this time, we’ll be forced to pick for you. This is a good thing, Kristen." Kristen’s mother soothes. 

Kristen bobs her head, dropping into a curtsey before rushing out of the room as fast as was proper. Her dress swirls around her ankles as she walks down the hallway, stone halls lined with paintings of her parents, her grandparents, their grandparents, all framed in shining gold. Kristen and a stranger would be up there soon. A woman can’t run a kingdom, not without a husband, and Kristen’s the oldest, so it’s up to her.
