03. A Viagem Sci-fi Tropical de Jaloo

Se o futuro fosse na Amazônia, a trilha sonora seria composta por Jaloo. A música dela é um garimpo de um universo particular, onde os sintetizadores e as batidas eletrônicas se encontram com o carimbó e a guitarrada. É um som que é, ao mesmo tempo, ancestral e futurista, regional e universal.

“Chuva” é uma das minhas portas de entrada favoritas para o mundo dela. A música tem uma melancolia eletrônica, uma atmosfera que te transporta para uma floresta úmida e iluminada por neon. A voz andrógina de Jaloo flutua sobre a batida, cantando sobre saudade de um jeito que soa como uma oração a um deus cibernético.

O trabalho de Jaloo é um lembrete de que a música eletrônica brasileira pode ir muito além do óbvio. Ele cria paisagens sonoras, te convida para uma viagem. É música para ouvir com fones de ouvido, de olhos fechados, se deixando levar pela correnteza de sons e sensações. É o Brasil que a gente não costuma ver, mas que está ali, pulsando e criando uma das artes mais originais da nossa geração.

Pet Shop Boys: Please (1986)

In the early months of 1986, electro-pop’s own Penn & Teller (i.e. a mouth and a mute, by the names of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, respectively) seemed to magically appear upon the music world stage, fully-formed and flying up the charts with their first long-player, Please.

(That title, according to the band’s website, was chosen because the duo wanted people to ask record store clerks, “Can I have the Pet Shop Boys album, Please?” -- perhaps by necessity, given its stark, white, minimalist cover and font treatment.)

Of course, being quite the single-minded (if not altogether simple-minded -- hey now!) ‘80s metal-head, I didn’t buy this album myself, but my younger brother did, and it’s his Brazilian pressing you see overhead; a little worse for wear and tear, but still intact after I rescued it from a date with the garbage dump.

And just because I didn’t buy the Pet Shop Boys’ blockbuster debut, doesn’t mean I wasn’t impressed with the driving force behind its success: first single “West End Girls,” where eloquent wordsmith Tennant (who previously edited for Smash Hits magazine and Marvel Comics!) addressed England’s oppressive class system and urban tensions with both sung melodies and rapped monotones, over Lowe’s irresistible, sophisticated musical bed.

Little did I know that the song was first recorded in 1983 with major input from U.S. producer Bobby Orlando and became a club hit the following year, before being re-recorded in late ‘85 in the form known to most of us today, on its way to the top of the U.K. and U.S. charts, the Top Ten in a dozen more countries, and major awards like the Brits and Ivor Novello.

By then, another Pet Shop Boys classic, the tongue-in-cheek ode to rampant ‘80s capitalism called “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” had also been recorded and released twice, performing nearly as well and going on to soundtrack numerous commercials and TV shows in decades to come.

And the album’s remarkable first half (only the opening, Kraftwerkian Speak & Spell robotic-voice of “Two Divided by Zero,” has been forgotten) boasted another winning pair in “Love Comes Quickly” (a perceptive slice of romantic wisdom) and “Suburbia” (an answer to “West End Girls” with its ironic glorification of suburban boredom and despair).

But here’s where the Pet Shop Boys’ debut abruptly and categorically flips from “more, please” to “please, no more,” as side two offerings like “Tonight is Forever,” “I Want a Lover,” and “Why Don’t We Live Together?” sound so shockingly ordinary, both lyrically or musically, to the near-perfection that preceded them.

The contrast is frankly astonishing, but it ultimately jives with Tennant and Lowe’s lengthy creative gestation, full of fits and starts alongside numerous producers (Stephen Hague worked on this final product) leading up to this LP, which obviously didn’t drop out of nowhere, as I originally thought.

Heck, based on its barren second half, one might even have argued that Please arrived a little bit too soon, if not for the three million units it wound up shifting worldwide, setting up the Pet Shop Boys for a long and productive career ... just like Penn & Teller!
