so i just finished watching sweetheart’s day again… i laugh every time, because i find the random bursting into song to be hilarious for whatever reason.
and maybe i’m a little biased, but it’s impossible for me to see the implications of this episode any other way. perhaps small implications, but i feel like they are there.
the way these two look at each other as armando sings, “you have my heart and hold the key”
the way mateo gives elena this tender, yearning, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it glance as armando sings “too shy to speak to you / or get too close to where you are”
i just can’t get over it… and the fact that mateo is the only one of elena’s friends we see here (granted, his wizardry was kind of vital to reversing armando’s spell). but i can’t recall the last time that, out of the four main amigos, it was just elena and mateo included in an episode without naomi or gabe being around.
and then they are, and the episode just happens to be called sweetheart’s day. am i reading into it? no idea. but i want to blissfully pretend what the showrunners did here was intentional.
i mean, where was this guy when flo and armando just strolled into his workshop? mateo never left the door open when he wasn’t in there. realistically, he was probably gathering potion supplies or something. but i’m sure you can assume all the other amazing possibilities my brain keeps coming up with (one day i’ll write a fanfic, maybe).
also, on a completely different note i believe this is the first and only episode where we get to hear a mateo and elena duet— and even then, it’s only one line (correct me if i’m wrong). and now i just feel robbed, because the two of them sounded good together.
but yeah— elena and mateo, the great unfinished symphony.
or maybe just one never started, but fed by my own delusional ideas.
